There may be a small pull-up competition coming up and i'd just like to see if i should bother joining.

max #of pull ups in one set / bodyweight

Strict pull-ups, palms facing away; full arm extension at bottom, chin above bar at top.

*update 11/14/07*
results of tonight's competition:
1st - 31
2nd - 30
3rd - 26 <-- me

4, maybe 5. 145 lb, untrained. I can do 4 in one set, in order to do more I need to get off the bar and walk around resting.

Push-ups on other hand, I have done up to 40 in one set, and over 120 in 5 sets.

btw: anybody know how to increase pull-up count? What muscles to train and how?

no clue. i used to do chin ups at the end of my back/bicep workout and would do 3 setts of 10. i'm 200lbs but workout pretty regularly.

i know that pull ups are harder than chin ups, but I think if I did them before I did my back/biceps I could probably do a decent amount.

Btw2: I have seen some guys do 35+ complete pull-ups, and they just kept going! THATs what I call strength, not how many lbs you bench in gimp suit.

This article on military.com sounds like a good system (not for an overall workout but to increase # of pull-ups)

Is Ashton Kutcher involved with this? I remember his push up competition from SNL a few years back... ;)

Anyway, maybe 1 or 2 now. I've always been able to do chin ups but pull ups apparently don't use muscles I use on a daily basis. If I started lifting again I'm sure I could do quite a few more after a couple months.

OP edited to say max # in one set; "set" being as long as your feet don't touch the ground.

are you over or under 200lbs? if you're over, then i don't have to worry about you (they're gonna split into 2 weight classes). If you're under, then i ain't playing

Translation to English: I cannot do even one pull-up and my penis is 0.4".

Most in a single set was 27 dead hang. But I was only 150 lb at the time. closing in on 170 now and busted out a set of 17 the other day, not too shabby.

I haven't done any in a while, probably since last fall when I started working out for a bit. I'd guess 6. I'm gonna work out later today after work anyway, I'll see if I can do 6.

How wide is your grip? Shoulder width then ~12 on a good day. If you're talking wide grip then not many

Edit: I'm ~160 lbs. 5'8

I have done two pull-ups in my life. Afterwards, my abdominal muscles always feel like they're about to burst out of me, probably to escape to some tropical island where they'll never have to work again.
First pull-up was after a year of stocking shelves and unloading trucks (or damn near anything that needed to be done) at Walmart. There's some heavy lifting to be done there. The second one was after working at a warehouse. Some of the crap that I had to lift there weighed more than me.

Max I've ever weighed was 126lbs. I tend to actually lose weight when I'm back to sedentary work during the semester, because I am the sort who can forget to eat quite easily, probably down to 1000-1500 calories a day during the week.

let's say...about the width when you signal a touchdown or somewhere thereabouts.

I usually do three sets of 5 once a week or so.

Last year I couldn't do a single one.

Last I tried a single set (About a month ago), I managed to do 23. Shoulder width, biceps pull-ups. I don't know if I can do quite as many triceps pull-ups.

15. If I had not fallen apart lately (end of summer, I like chocholate), I was doing 17 before. That's palms facing behind me, total full extension of arms at the bottom and chin above bar at a bodyweight of about 170. Pullups are the staple of my back workout. These are all a touch wider than shoulder. If palms are facing in front, naturally it's harder and results in less reps.
