Do I have to download and install to make seti at least a little user friendly?? I got the client up and runnning last night it downloaded 1 WU and I could not get it to get more than 1, it took a little over 4 hours to do this WU so my machine sat for a bunch of hours doing nothing. I cannot find the state.sah file anywhere. When I do a search for the seti it finds it in the windows folder but for the life of me I cannot find it with a eyeball search. I also dont understand how it can be in a windows file when it is a DOS prog. and runs in a dos window. If I cannot find it I cannot install any of the addon's because they have to be in the same folder. The client I installed is the cli client. I would sure like to get all my machines off of rc5 and get them over to seti but it seems it is not worth the hassle. Help me out here This is the 3rd time i have tried to get this going, I am beginning to think I am really stupid. One other thing I am on a dial up so only want to dump and recharge now and then.

Bleep,

I borrowed this from Smokeball (It's using SETIDriver and the CLI version of SETI...you can set the cache to how many WU's you want to download and only download when you want...auto transmit off)..

<< Place SetiDriver.exe and the CLI in the same folder.

Leave Maximum Processes set to 1.

Change Desired Cache Size to 1.

Uncheck: Hide Processing.

Uncheck: Auto Transmit.

Check: Display Transmit.

Save Config.

NOW, Click Transmit (NOT NEW CLIENT).

Select 1 or 2 and enter your email address.

THEN

Change the Desired Cache Size to whatever you want it to be.

Check: Hide Processing

Check: Auto Transmit

Uncheck: Display Transmit

Click: Save Config

Progress Monitoring: SetiDriver and SetiLog are what I like to pick.

Don't forget to change C:\Windows\System\Conagent file properties\Miscellaneous by Unchecking: Warn if Still Active.

Screen Saver: Blank Screen

Create a Shortcut in the StartUp Folder to SetiDriver.exe and change the properties of this shortcut to RUN MINIMIZED.

This will work everytime.

Smokeball

PS: Don't forget to go to POWER options and change everything to NEVER.

Sorry I didn't type this myself...I've got to go to bed!

<< << Place SetiDriver.exe and the CLI in the same folder. >>

First thing this is part of the problem I cannot find the SETI folder in Explore. Second I have downloaded seti driver 4 times now and It will not unzip it wants to keep opening in word pad and you know what I see (the programming)
I have read all the help's and the FAQ and I have not found anything that helps, check the links the FAQ link just goes around in a circle. I would not have asked any questions without reading all the stuff on how to get it going. Sorry I hope i have not been a inconvenience to you.

<< Don't forget to change C:\Windows\System\Conagent file >>

This file does not exist on my machine Start Search files and folders will not even find it.

Bleep,

The first thing to do is to CREATE a new folder in your C:\ drive. Name that folder (my suggestion) Seti@Home.

C:\Seti@Home

Then follow the instuctions outline above.

You probably don't need to download the SetiDriver or the CLI again.....just do a search to find them and then copy and paste them into the folder you just created.

Does this sound like it may be part of the problem to you? Sometimes the most elementary things are left out of many instructions. ;)

Let me know.....I'll hang around for a while and try to help you out with this. :)

Thanks:
What I have done now is I created a new folder on my desktop and put all the seti files on it I could find. I finally got the seti driver to unzip but it will not install. I get a not enough conventional memory error. What the heck is that?? I unzipped the seti driver to the same folder that all my other seti files are in. Do I have to shut down the client before I install seti driver?? I got 5 more machines to go if I ever get this one going. Beginning to look like a lost cause. I have read a lot of posts about this the last month or so and it seems no one has the problems I am having.
I will perserver and overcome, no dam program is going to beat me into submission.

That's the right attitude! :)

OK, now since you haven't got this stuff working correctly I suggest you start fresh. That means close any open CLI or anything else associated with SETI. Since you got some kind of a MEM warning you should reboot and start fresh. If you have anything in your start up folder that is starting a CLI or a GUI SETI Client....remove it from the startup folder.

You said you created the Seti@Home folder on your DESKTOP? You should put it in your C: Drive. It may work from your desktop but I've not heard of anyone running it from that location. CUT and PASTE it to your C: Drive

You should end up with C:\Seti@Home with that folder containing SetiDriver.exe and the CLI Client

Tell me when you get all that done. ;)

Bleep, YHPM

Try running a thorough virus scan. A zip archive opening in wordpad is a bad sign of something royally screwed up.
Maybe you just inadvertantly reassigned the association, or maybe somebody else did it for you.
Is this machine seriously overclocked - as in "radically overclocked"?
An executable opening in word pad also sounds very bad. Maybe your dial up connection is at fault, seti driver could be corrupted.
Sometimes corrupted executables give weird "ram" errors.
Let me know by return PM the answers to those questions and these points.

Bleep You dont write witch OS you are using, but in case you use NT / 2K, then dont place the folder on the desktop.
Then you end up have security problems, its much better to place the folder in c:\seti@home like Smokeball suggested.

Hope you get it up and running.. :)

Yes, that is not normal for a .zip file to open in Wordpad. :) Those RAM errors are really strange too.

Do you have the GUI installed? If so, go into the Add/Remove programs thingee and uninstall it! :)
