How many processes should my comp. be running at once?

My comp. seems to be having a little trouble but I'm not sure what exactly it is (it's a new tower and I'm still feeling it out). Anyway I just checked my processes and it is running 42 total. This seems high to me but I am basing this on my last comp. (3+ yrs. old @900mhz/125/20). My new setup while not a Porche is plenty for me, 1.7ghz/512/80. Should I be worried w/ all the processes? If so is there software out there that I can get to help manage none essential processes? TIA.

yes, my friend. you should be worried. I would get the following programs if I were you. there may be better, but I find this list works for me. Startup mechanic may help you get a better idea of what processes are running. Startup manager will help prevent startup processes from coming back.
for a more advanced tutorial, I suggest going to the site http://www.blackviper.com

oh may be a little high I usually seem to have 25-30 most of the time.
problem is every program you get wants to install itself on the taskbar here is a good freebie program.

www.windowsstartup.com
called startup inspector give it a try. or go to your startmenu/run and type in msconfig
go to the startup tab and remove any unwanted items.
If you feel uncomfortable doing that startup inspector gives you recommendations as to which are safe to uncheck.

Thanks alot for the help. I think some of my processes are all the security software I have installed. It seems to be fine today although I'm still running about the same processes. If it happens again I will probably try to correct it. I found a link to a process library which will help me to determine what I need and don't need. Thanks again.
