Hi, WinXP pro..
i have 24 processes loaded when XP is started.

so many svchost.exe

i have disabled some "svchost.exe", but when i do a fast shutdown using "shutdown.exe -r -t 00" command" there is a fast error message saying "fail to initialize" something, whcih i don't have enough time to see. since it only last less then 1 sec.

please tell me something u know u have to disable or must not load to gain speed from startup(services)?

thanks

Twelve: I've disable all the services I can do without and remove almost everything from startup.

I have 24 to 26 running all the time but who cares? It doesn't seem to slow the system down any that I can tell and it boots up faster than any Windows version I have had to date. I have no complaints here.

Many, but most are taking up nearly no resources, and are asleep. I can dive detailed info in....

327 process IDs are used to get me into Gnome. Whatever the first thing I run is, it's PID 328

I've got seventeen services at startup. Cable Modem, Zone Alarm and no Networking.

Cryptographic Services
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Event Log
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Plug and Play
Print Spooler
Protected Storage
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Server
System Event Notification
Themes
True Vector Internet Monitor
Windows Audio
Windows Management Instrumentation
Workstation

These are set to automatic and start up. I'm running 512 MB RAM and I have 410 MB Free at start up.

...oh and I'm running XP Pro on a 2.0 GHz P4/ ...somebody gimme a cookie!

Hmmm....I have 25 services running at startup. I also run ZA. I have Norton AV set to auto-protect as well.

My RAM usage at startup is about 91MB. So I'm running 8 more services (and the NAV-related services use almost 15MB of RAM all by themselves) than you are, and use less RAM.

I don't claim to be any sort of an NT expert but a lot of people that seem to know what they're talking about say that it's pointless to shut off all sorts of services to try and save RAM. They'll tell you that Win2000/XP is real good at memory management and only allocates RAM to things when it needs to.

I'm a pretty hardcore tweaker myself and have spent more than a bit of time trying to turn off/disable "un-needed" services and have never been able to make any noticeable difference in RAM usage or performance in various benchmarks. Nowadays I just disable the few unsecure services and turn about 7 or so to manual and leave it at that.

BTW - On a related topic: I don't know if any of you guys have noticed it but sp1 bumps the "explorer" service up from around 12MB at startup to 22-23MB. There's 10+ megs of RAM gone *poof* just like that.

18 Processes in 2k w SP3
Max was 21, but I stoped some using MS Config that was added as a separate file (actually 2 files I believe).

327 process IDs are used to get me into Gnome. Whatever the first thing I run is, it's PID 328
327 processes? I don't think I could do that if I loaded every program I have!! Are you sure it is 327??

Time to get rid of Gnome!

PID is a process identfier.

I have 34 Processes, haven't turned any off - doesn't seem necessary - may do more harm than good unless you know exactly what each is for

As Chaotic says - most of them are doing nothing anyway - they don't seem to affect the general working of XP - smooth and fast - CPU usage and PF usage etc are ok

What about Services in Admin Tools - there's a nice long list of those too if you like 'fiddling' !

I suppose if you do a lot of Multi-tasking and are short on RAM then it makes sense but otherwise I don't see the point of turning things off just for the sake of it - am I missing something?

Yes.

My idle usage is 0%. Aside from running eccp, I've never hit 1.00 usage.

Yes, that's correct.

but at least i got "one service" that is slowing my ICQ down...
it takes more than 3 minutes from loading till login...
until i turn that off, i can login within 15seconds which i think it is very reasonable...
i don't really remember which service i turned off though
