Hi All,

I'm thinking of developing a Global SMS Web service, so that people could build text messaging functionality into their own websites/applications, and just wanted to gauge interest. Do you guys develop applications using Web services and do you think such an API would be valuable?

The Web service would allow a user to text message almost any one in the world without having to know the carrier information of the recipient.

Any resources in this field would also be great. Thanks for your help!

I did today very much, because some girl in the next county txt'd me thinking she was talking to her boyfriend and I strung her along for a while. She knew the number was wrong so I didn't feel bad that she couldn't put 2 and 2 together. Entertaining to say the least.

It's a collosal pain in the butt to do with most phones. SNL or MadTV had a really good skit mocking how slow and cumbersome the process was a couple years ago. Wish I could find it.

I don't know what "ppl" or "txt" means, but I use short messaging service on my mobile phone a fair bit, probably more than I call people.

Even so, not all that much, because I don't have many friends.

Edit: Obligatory "my phone is better than yours" (unless you have a P910). (I have a Sony Ericsson P900).

No, it's pretty easy to do with most phones, and cheap too. Unless you have really fat fingers, of buy a phone which makes it hard to do (Nokia made a phone which was awful for texting).

Why don't you add a poll? Some people just like voting and not writing a response, like me sometimes. I think I've sent a text message once in the past 4 years. Good luck.

I have a P910i :)

I txt a bit but not that much as it is faster to call instead of sending a few text across. Some of my mates have 100+ text so they text more. I don't have any free or bundled texts though :p

It is pretty fast once you get use to the T9 predictive text. I just scribe stuff on my touch screen instead though.

My phone is better than yours, by default, we have better phones than you, in England of course.

It's not completely free for me, costs a few cents to send/receive so I only leave it to emergencies... and at that point, why wouldn't I just dial a phone, ya know ? I also have AIM on my phone...

My friends and I used to back when send/receiving text messages on my phone was free with our cell phone service. Stopped when they started charging 3 cents per msg.
