guys i have a question....im not a computer newbie ...i would like to know how you use 7-8 harddrives using the raid setup...i do know the science and the theory behind the raid( im comsci major)...but where do you fit that many hard drives in one tower???

5 in one
1-floppy
1-60G HDD
1-30G HDD
1-CDRW
1-CDROM

4 in the other
1-floppy
1-20G HDD

1 floppy
1 pioneer dvd116s
1 lite-on 16/10/40

and outside i got a 40gig external firewire.

...i have less than 5gb free thanks to anime.

Have a nice day 🙂

Visit the TECHNICAL SUPPORT forum or the HIGHLY TECHNICAL forum....if you ask this question here...you'll just get a bunch of nef threads.
Good luck 🙂

BTW:
1x18GB SCSI
8x20 Plextor SCSI
6x Pioneer DVD SCSI
1x40GB Maxtor 7200RPM

Floppy, 20GB IBM hard drive (It might be a 75GXP, one of the much older ones anyway...who knows, it's been working for a few years), 100GB WD1000B Hard drive, 12x DVD-ROM, 12x/4x/32x HP CD-RW drive.

If you're a comsci major then you're not a very successful one, are you? 😀 More than likely, the user with 7-8 hard drives is not using a tower but a server case with an internal hot-swappable drive cage. Though it would be possible to use an external hard drive cage and a raid controller in the box, it's less common. In either case the drives could be configured in a single RAID5 logical drive or split into many other different configurations depending on need.

1 20GB maxtor hd
1 40GB IBM 60gxp hd
1 dvd drive
1 cdrw drive
1 floppy
___________
5
I don't use the floppy nor the dvd though.

And trust me I know a lot of compsci majors that don't know a dang thing about the inside of a computer case.

6:
PIONEER DVD-ROM DVD-106 [CD-ROM drive]
TDK CDRW161040X [CD-ROM drive]
3.5" format removeable media [Floppy drive]
IBM-DPTA-373420 (34.22 GB) [Hard drive]
Maxtor 5T060H6 (61.49 GB) [Hard drive]
Maxtor 91360U4 (13.61 GB) [Hard drive]

BooneRebel has it mostly right....

My workstation has no internal HDs, just an external F/W hot-swap drive tower (Compaq).
My server has 4 drives internal in a hot-swap (that's the max) cage (which is in the tower, but the HDs (on sleds) can be pulled w/o opening the case up or powering the server down).
The server also has a 7 drive Fast/Narrow external hot-swap drive tower, which isn't full, because I can't find enough narrow drives, and I don't want to put in 1g drives.

And, I just bought another F/W drive tower, but this one's a rack-mount, and will take 7 drives. ($46.50 shipped from e*ay 🙂)

Let's see...

1 x Floppy drive
1 x plextor 24x cdrw
1 x pioneer 16x dvd
1 x 40 gb WD 7200 rpm
2 x 60 gb wd 5400 rpm
2 x 80 gb maxtor 5400 rpm
1 x 100gb wd 5400 rpm
-------------------------------
hmm so 2 optical drives and 420 gb of storage
about 80% of the storage except for the 40gb drive is dedicated to store anime 🙂

1 x 40/24/10 Plextor cdrw
1 x 6x Pioneer Slot DVD
1 x 40.9GB Maxtor DiamondMax+ 60
1 x 30.7GB IBM Deskstar 75GXP
1 x Floppy

Average, and only in my main rig though.

<< 1. Floppy
2. DVD
3. CD-RW
4. 30GB HD
5. 10GB HD
>>

change 5 to a 60GB and that's what I gots. Wouldn't want any more... too much clutter.

Across three machines:

1 x floppy

Job:
1 x floppy
1 x cdrom
1 x 30.7 WD hdd
1 x 10.2 IBM hdd

elcheapo:
1 x floppy
1 x cdrom
1 x WD 6.4 hdd
1 x WD 1.6 hdd
1 x WD 540MB hdd
1 x 8x Acer cdrw

total of 16 across three systems plus a number of spares laying around... 😀

My Box -

1 x Floppy
1 x 20 gig
1 x 27 gig
1 x 40 gig
1 x 4 gig SCSI
1 x 8x20 SCSI burner
1 x 40x SCSI CDROM
1 x card reader

So 8 I guess.
