I probably started lurking / using the forum in 2001 or so, maybe earlier but can't be certain (I remember using another popular forum at the time that was known for the 3DMark development... forget what it was called now!)

Didn't join until 2003 though when it got to a point I couldn't find answers to my problems by searching.

Yeah pretty much this. Reddit is a fun read but that’s about it.
Too difficult to find stuff
app kind of sucks
Ask a question and never get a response but you get upvotes for “reasons”
Not very good humor imo
Some answers are very good many others are half assed imo

Same....I was introduced to Anandtech from a college friend that had a tricked out Maxima. (racing clutch/transmission)

He was always talking about the other folks on the forums that had Maximas and that was within months of the forums going online. I lurked for many months before joining.
