How many people here have ever bought a brand new car?

I personally would not and never had. Even though the warranty is always great and you get to be the original owner, the fact that it depreciates so so so much sucks. Give me a used car any day (and I have always bought from a private party, I guess I like to gamble).

I just bought a new Mustang GT. They haven't been depreciating much. I paid less for my '06 than KBB for an equivalent '05 with 10,000 miles.

EDIT: It's a popular car for a reason. 🙂

I like em alot better than the last gen of mustangs and the 80s (yuck) mustangs, but the only mustang I would ever get would be an old school muscle one.

Bought a brand new 2005 Mustang GT last year....along with 2 others in this thread 🙂

Twice in my life. And no, Hondas do not depreciate that fast.

Hondas are fantastic I agree. Right now I am driving a 93 honda accord that is rock solid that I paied 1k for last august 🙂 However, I still would not buy a brand new car.

But no one has ever farted in a new car. With a used car, the previous owner has probably farted in the seat...

 First time I heard anyone use that as a criteria for buying new.

I just bought a 2006 Scion tC brand new. A lot of people on here have bought new cars. Here is an example:

New Car $20,000
Residual after 3years: $14,500
Price paid for car (Tax on 20,000) +$5500

3year old car out of warranty $15,500
Residual after 3years: $11,000
Price paid for repairs: $1000
Price paid for car (Tax on $15,500)+$5500

Beater that wont break down for 3 years $5,500
Repairs to said beater for 3 years $1000
Residual for Beater = $1000
Price paid for Beater = $5500

I bought a new Honda.

For my wife we got a used Acura TSX with 5k miles. It was certified pre-owned, so the remainder of the warranty (with the additional 1 year/12k miles for being certified preowned) was MORE than if we had bought a brand new one. But if my car is indication, we'll never have the opportunity to take advantage of the warranty. 🙁

Oh well. Bumper-to-bumper until 2010 and powertrain until 2012 = peace of mind.

Certified preowned means they remove any post-owner fart dust from the seat, correct?

How convenient that your 3 completely made up examples came out almost exactly the same. 😉

Once - 2001 Tundra, which I had to sell 3 years later. Probably never again until I'm old, decrepit, and spending the kids inheritance 😀

you're assuming the new car is not gonna need anything in 3 years, and that the used car is a piece of sh1t needing $1000 in maintenance.

also, being in Ontario that the tax is calculated based on the red book value, it will be cheaper to register the used car.

Absolutely! There was a faint smoke smell from the previous owner, they got that out too.

For years, being in the car business, I have always driven new cars. I either had a car allowance, or a demonstrator to drive. When I had a car allowance, I was leasing them for 3 years, then turning them in at the end. I enjoyed always being under warranty.
If my circumstances were different, I would probably only buy 2-3 year old cars, then buy a 100k mile warranty. I bought my last two on very low factory interest rates. 0 percent on one and 1.9% on the other. Sometimes the financing available can make the decision.
