My wife and a friend of ours (who I wouldn't exactly call "handy") installed mine as a birthday surprise.

By "on your own" do you mean just yourself, without any help? If so, it'd be pretty difficult without a 2nd pair of hands.

If you just mean not having professional installs do it, then sure, its not all that complicated.

I'll be installing it with the help of a buddy (or my gf who is the one that wants to get rid of the TV stand).
It's for the bedroom in an apartment (the wall is just drywall).
I have basic tools, I'm guessing I'll need a stud finder?

oh, TV is a 42" Panasonic plasma.

Oh, then yeah, its doable. You do need a stud finder, but other than that, it should be fairly easy to figure out.*

*i assume no liability should your TV come crashing down onto the floor.

I put up a 32'' by my self but it was a pain i was just determined
i used a stud finder, box cutter knife, 2 wall plates (power and 2 coax), 2 wall boxes, and the wall mount, some in wall coax, and power cables

I ran every thing up through the wall and put wall plates for my connections behind the tv (horizontal under the wall mount)

IMO Wall Mounted tv should never have their wires showing

Stud finder and a socket wrench/sockets. Gotta get those lag bolts into the studs. Much easier if you have a drill attachment.

With 2 people, it's a very easy job. Just wall mounted a 42" Panasonic TH-42PX75U with a friend.

I installed this...the wife had to help lift the TV onto the wall though since it I couldn't get enough leverage to lift it high enough...not very difficult at all...

I did the 47" LCD westy by myself although I wouldnt suggest it if you cant easily pick up that weight. The wall mount I had made it very easy for someone to do it by themselves if they have no trouble picking up the TV from the front.

Are you allowed to drill holes into the wall, cut drywall(if you're hiding the wires), if you're living in an apartment? I understand a condo since you own it, but not sure on an apartment that you're renting.

I've done it a bunch of times but you'll want a second set of hands to actually put the TV onto the mount if its any larger then 32 inchs.

You will need a stud-finder, a level & ideally a power-drill to get it done.

I installed my 50''

I just needed help from the wife to carry the tv and hook it onto the mount :)

tools needed
stud finder
#2 pencil
leveler (3 foot version would be great so you can level out between the stud)
corded/ cordless drill
drill bit's
and a basic ratching set

I put up a 32" Vizio LCD all by myself. I used the tools suggested above.

You gotta get in those studs!!!

The hardest part was finally letting go of the TV once I got it on the mount - That, my friends, is a scary moment.

Not for me. ;)

I was yanking the crap out of the mount when it was on the wall to make sure it was secure.

Oh, I tested the heck out of the mount before putting the TV up - pulling and hanging on it (I weigh around 240lbs.) - that thing is not coming down unless the wall comes down. ;)

I was more worried about getting the TV on the mount right and getting the locking pins in so the TV did not slip off.

Then when you leave the apartment, buy an inexpensive painting and hang it over the wall plates.

Sure, you just need to repair the holes when you move out. Not a big deal if you're handy with a little spackle. The holes are suprisingly small for what you're hanging.

Over the weekend I hung up a 50" Plasma and my 24" LCD. Lot of fun and really easy.

Hanging a 50" plasma was a chore for even two.
But make sure you know the height you want before drilling those holes.
I was surprised how a few inches up or down makes a big diff in viewing comfort.
I'd even go as far to have two people hold it at diff heights
as you test your viewing comfort, before drilling.

In that situation I would ask the landlord. If you're a good tenant and plan on staying a while, they might not have an issue with it; but other landlords are just asshats and will say no to everything.

Usually, it is easier to ask for forgiveness that for permission. ;)

(But check your lease to see what your rights are in regards to hanging things on the wall, which, after all, is all your are doing. As long as you fix the holes before you move out, there probably should not be an issue.)

One of my college buddies painted dartboards on his apartment walls (one at a time, moving them as the wall gave out). After three years, he just cut out the affected area (rather large and numerous, as I am sure you could imagine), put up new dry wall, mudded and painted.

Just a thought...
I bet if you agreed to leave the tv after moving, it would be ok. :D
