There are definitely enough players/servers to have fun with. There are at least 400 with my filters on (Don't show servers full, Don't show servers that are empty, Don't show servers with passwords)

This game is really great. Nice nice textures. I was pleasantly surprised. An absolute steal at $ 4.95...... I got my money's worth already this weekend. How many maps are there roughly?

Is the free weekend done?

I don't see it anymore on the website or on steam.

I've been playing it for years and thoroughly enjoy it. Each weapon is pretty unique and takes awhile to learn. I would recommend it, especially at $5.

I own it, and have tried getting into DoD: Source, but just can't get into it. I keep trying to compare it to the Call of Duty series. The game felt stiff without leaning (at least I couldn't figure out how to lean).

Also, trying to start out as a newb in this game felt like starting out in Counterstrike: Source a year after it was out. Everyone knows exactly where to go in every map, and the games felt like they are just the same tactics and strategies being repeated over and over.

I actually had a positive kill to death ratio, so that was pretty cool, I guess.

Yeah, I agree with that. Like anything else, you're gonna get pwned until you play for a few hours. But pretty soon, you start to learn the "ambush sites" pretty quickly : ). So the old school guys - how many maps are there out there. (Not including the Orange ones)?

I used to play dod:s in CAL back in the day, quite a fun game.

The problem that most people run into is that it doesnt have lean from CoD, and its a lot quicker than CS with sprinting. The other big problem, one of the reasons that i left, is that unless youre iron sighted, the guns do NOT go right on the crosshair, they go in the general area. Not a big deal until you get competitive with it though.

mods, you can remove this if you feel its against the ToS with the forums, but if youre all looking for a server with some friendly players and where you can get some people to help you out, check out the server starting with !TAC (208.100.45.53:27015). if they ask how ya found out about the server just say merl said it was a good place to go :). and no, i dont get anything out of it, just one of my old clans, good guys.

I'd be willing to help some people out too, if theyre looking to learn the ropes of dods, just drop me a PM.

EDIT: As far as the maps...stock maps are: Flash, avalanche, donner, argentan, anzio, and kalt, jagd, and colmar. Some of the custom ones that are popular are salerno and rails.

If i didnt forget any maps, thats 6 standard "capture the point" maps, 2 bomb maps (colmar and jagd), and 2 relatively common other maps.

It was the best online game I ever played. Great group of people on Kustom Kettle, played it since about 2002, 1.2b or something like that, right before they added (and later removed) the scope to the k43, it was really, really unfair
You could sit up in this attic on Caen and rip off 5 or so very quick sniped shots without any recoil or stutter.
And for me, one of the best aspects of the game was BANDAGING WOUNDS!!! I loved that, you heard the telltale 'zwip, zwip, zwip' of someone bandaging and you knew it was an easy kill.
I know, it happened to me alot. Hell, they even had stationary machine guns in Caen at one point.
I love that game, it will always be my fav to play, it just lost alot of it's personality over the years. I think it's most endearing feature was that it emphasized teamwork, especially with multiple person flag caps.

Not true anymore. Since the engine update they're much more accurate.

Selerno doesn't exist anymore. Its been added to stock maps and they changed the name to Palermo. Haven't played in a while have ya? I play in CAL Main and a couple of seasons ago we won Main outright. Interested to see how good you are ;)

There are plenty of custom maps out there and a strong yet small community. Compared to CSS the raw numbers are small but this isn't a game that is going to evaporate in 6 months time. DoD:S will be around for a long time probably until the next sequel comes out.

For $5 it's a steal go get it and have some fun!

No kiddin they changed it around eh? Slick.

What team were you on in main? way back in the day (season 2-3) I played on Delta Company, and a little more recently (uh...maybe season4?) i played for The Gentlemans Source Team. Even more recently than that, I played for TCO, who apparentally won main this season. my tag is merl. I was pretty soft spoken in the community (which are a bunch of asshats mostly...another reason why i left). More people knew my roommate, Play, who played on the same teams as i did.

if the crosshairs are actually semi accurate, i might have to fire it up.... i sold my desktop since then, we'll see how it runs on my lappy.

The team that won Main was Notik and we were damned good. Too bad after the win everyone went their separate ways (which seems to be the norm when they win). I go off of the name iPong or Pong and have played on WCCL, 8 BiT gaming, Notik and now redLine. You mention two teams that ring a bell. TCO I have heard of but The Gentlemans Source Team was amazing a few seasons ago. I've also heard of Delta. Do you know a player named Revy or Iplaylikagirl? She was on Delta at one time. As for the community, you're right. A bunch of asshats with nothing better to do than trash talk BS and belittle other people. That's why I never frequent any of their forums or get too involved in the politics. I also stay out of mIRC as I think its archaic and just gives people the chance to do what is stated before in a quicker fashion.

Ahh, well the engine update is current with the TF2 engine which was much more accurate. The most annoying thing now is that assaults are amazingly accurate and almost seem to be able to snipe. Exaggerating of course but it seems that way. I'm a rifle and they get quite annoying.

notik eh? jukebox still play? hes a slick guy. Other than that, i dont remember too many of the guys from there, but you were always a pretty solid team.

yeah, i was a starting carbineer/rifleman for the Gentlemen. me, miles, play, uber, fuzzy, and shaman were our starting 6 back then. Had a pretty darn good squad :).

Yeah, looks like TCO won main this season and is in invite now. Havent played with them in a match situation in a while, but i still pub with em occasionally.

So weird with the assault, that gun used to not be able to hit the broad side of the barn. maybe ill fire it up tomorrow.

http://www.game-monitor.com/

then on the drop down menu labeled PLAYING scroll through and you'll see how many are playing now.

CS 1.6: ~115,000
CS:S ~ 62,000
DOD:S ~ 7,800
BF2: ~ 19,000
COD2 ~ 12,000
COD4 ~ 35,000
TF2 ~ 12,000

and the sad ones are:
ETQW: ~700
Front Lines Fuel of war ~228
UT3 ~ 626

This is world wide. You can select United States and run the search on whatever game you want and it will tell you total # of players playing

In US

CS:S ~10,000
DOD:S ~ 1,700
COD4: ~ 10,000
BF2: ~5,500
TF2: ~6,000

That's the site I use to gauge whether or not to get a MP game...like UT3 or FFOW? No way man..

FFOW: 46 people in the US are playing now
UT3: 129 people in the US are playing now
THat is SAD.
