Current desktop is about a month old. Previous desktop was built in 2004 and upgraded in 2007. I keep PCs a while. I'll probably have this one until 2015, maybe longer.

It's kind of amazing how long you can hold onto a pc these days. Years are when we had 100mhz Pentiums you could get massive gains every 18 months These days i'm on a amd x2 cpu for gaming and it does everything I throw at it. I've never gone so long without an upgrade.

parents are on a PIII 1ghz machine.
runs web browser and Word fine

i havent upgraded in a couple of yrs.
wont upgrade till Diablo III comes out

I've just replaced the case and it is more than likely I'll have to upgrade my graphics cards, since I think they are dead. I'll find out on Friday when I complete the re-build.

I might replace the CPU next year if I can get hold of a reasonably priced second-hand OEM 980X.

Might be getting a laptop, iPad or wait for a RIM Playbook though.

My machine is almost 2 years old and other than plans to add another hard drive for media storage it's not going to get upgraded anytime soon. As I'm not a hardcore gamer this is still far more than I really need.

I want a 6-8 core CPU to replace my E8400, upgrade to 8GB ram from 4, upgrade my 4870 to 6870 or 6970, a SSD... But I'll have to hold on to what I have for a bit longer coz I need money to pay for property tax!

I upgrade when there is a game that I want to play that will not run without major sacrifices. Thanks to console ports stalling (software) innovation, no such game exists.

I am still running strong since end of 2006 when I built my rig, its still good to me...
I am sure i feel its still adequate because I have not been up to date with gaming at all.

I work for a company that makes handlers for Intel so everyone buy Intel chips!!!

We also make handlers for AMD if anyone cares. :p

pretty sure it'll be a few more years before software requirements can catch up to my early 2009 hardware (i7 920, 6gb, gtx285). i can still easily run any of the new games

will be constantly adding more 2TB hds for my burgeoning bluray collection

I did a new build in June 2009 when I got the Phenom II. I've only upgraded the GPU since then, from a 3850 to a 5770. No problems with it and it overclocks well enough.

I really don't use it enough to justify costly upgrades.

I buy Intel exclusively. I like AMD cpus ok, but Intel chipsets are the only way to go, and to have an Intel chipset you need an Intel cpu.

Ehh I upgraded pretty recently, maybe a year and a half or so ago to a 4870 and phenom, then, maybe 10 months ago or so to a phenom 2 cpu... (from socket 939)... don't really need to upgrade now, but maybe next year I will...

I'm on an HP DV5 (P8400 and 9600M GT) I've had for almost two years now. Its battery can't be trusted for more than five minutes and the connector for the display is slowly going, but I'd like to keep this for about another year. The battery is a relatively cheap fix, I'm a little concerned about the connector though.

My current system hasn't gotten any upgrades, aside from more storage, in nearly 15 months. Its an E8500, 8GB DDR2, Radeon 4870 system.

I'm not planning any significant upgrades until Sandy Bridge and Bulldozer are fully established across all market segments. However, I may opt to drop in a Radeon 6970 in a few months. Might. My 4870 is getting a little long in the tooth. Still runs everything very well, but I'd like to dial up the settings somewhat.

When I do a full rebuild, I'll probably keep my current full tower ATX Lian Li case because its Fing awesome and it'd keep the build cost down. But, I'd like to build something much smaller, such as a mini-ITX system. Something with a smaller foot print that still allows me to play most of my games are decent quality settings. I can pick up a Drobo or something similar for storage.

Still have an LGA775 with C2D e6420. Doing a tiny bit of research already, looking into practicality of upgrading around next summer. Core i7 definitely, just not sure if that current mainstream socket is a good idea (i'm fine with dual-channel, that memory controller still kicks ass with dual-channel), versus the premium enthusiast 1300+pin socket.
That, and I hate total rebuilds. I'll want a new case, need a new motherboard, DDR3 instead of my DDR2 as well... have to fresh install Windows again, and all that fun shit. Not looking forward to it, not in the least.

Considering I just spent about $2800 on building my last system a few months back so not likely to spend anything directly on it. Might get a good set of headphones or something.
