How many of you out there also agree that this game often defies statistical logic. I just got done playing a game where I had $2000, hotels on the yellows, hotels on the greens, and hotels on medit + baltic, and my opponent had everything mortaged, $1000, and the oranges with no houses.

An hour later, he won. I love this game.

i've found almost all of it is the luck of the dice. barring any retarded trades, the outcome of the game is almost always determined in the first 2-3 times around the board.

He's going to be telling this story to his grandkids.

I'm actually pretty good at the game, but how far does any "skill" take you in a 95% luck based game? Not too far. In the beginning, all I had were medit + baltic, and he held at least one piece of every other property, but I was able to offer him trades that benefitted me more than him at the time. That's what got me as far as I managed to get. Then after 6 rounds of passing all three sets of my monopolies (and I had the railroads, he never hit those once either), he finally had enough money to lay down houses on orange, and somehow I hit them every single turn. Then, when he had enough money to build up the purples, I started hitting the purples AND the oranges every single turn, and did not miss either of them once the rest of the game.

I just try to get the orange and reds. People seem to land on them the most. Also the hotels and houses for them are cheap but you get a crap load back. I don't even try to get BW or PP. If I have one I just trade it or sell it.

Yeah, I usually trade BW away for something cheaper that I can dump hotels on, while my opponent only has enough to put two houses on.

Used to play it all the time with friends in junior high.

Our games would last for days... when we were done, we would count everyones money and write it down.. and then resume the next day, heh.

I luv the game, but it's hard to find players who can stop figgeting, talking on their cells, etc, to really have a good, involving game anymore. :(

If you play one-on-one, the game is about the dice, unless one or the other is a moron.

If you play with about four people, it's possible for the person in 4th place to make a good trade that drives at least one or two others out of the game.

Of course, if you play with the "Free Parking" house rule, the dice become more important (though the first dice are less important), and you can end up in an inflationary loop where there is no end to the game, unless someone gets bored.

My gf gets irritated with me because no matter what I seem to win every time. I don't get it either.

I don't remember playing a game of monopoly when she was one of the other players when I didn't win.

(I don't cheat either :p)

I like it, but only because the last time I lost a game was in 1987 :)

As a result, nobody else in my family likes it heheh.

Like a previous poster mentioned, you can play a java applet version online at games.com, which is where I got spanked in my statistically impossible game :p
