When you crunch the numbers, it's almost as expensive to build your own box. Assuming you're doing it legally (and not using a pirated OS), you might as well buy WMCE, which is ~$120 for an OEM copy. Throw in another $30 for the remote. Then you've got to build the PC. If you buy one of those little Shuttle cases, you're going to spend around $150 just for the case. You'll need a CPU, RAM, capture card, and hard disk drives. Even if you could get all that for $150, you'll have spent $450 on it. You can get a Tivo ($190) with a lifetime subscription ($300) for $40 more. Plus there's a $150 MIR on the Tivo - bringing your total cost to $340.

Granted the Tivo doesn't have network capiblity right out of the box, but buy a $50 USB adapter and you're done.

Now, you could use MythTV and the OS would be free, but you're still paying at least $300 for a less elegant solution.

The only real advantage homebrewed PVR's have over a Tivo/ReplayTV is that you really don't have to worry about forced updates that stop you from doing things like saving shows indefinatly or fast-forwarding through commercials (although if Tivo did the latter, it'd be the death of the company).

That should be compatible with TiVo DVR2's

Also a few people are wondering "what is Tivo Basic and why is it free"?

I got this, I like to keep my TV viewing as cheap as possible.

BTW what mods you talking about?

Just the standard tivo hacks. I swapped out the old HD for a 160GB so I have way more recording time. I can also extract video from the Tivo to my PC, and then convert it to whatever format I want.

How do you do the video extract? I'm using Tivo2Go now and it sux- you can't edit the recording at all, and you need special software to burn to DVD. I've been doing the "Save to VCR" thing to a video capture box hooked up to my laptop, but that's a pain to set up. A software solution would be nice.

Which web site, guide or FAQ did you use?

It isn't something theres really a step-by-step guide to the whole thing. Most of the tivo community folks are the kind that are anti-noob friendly, they make you do some research for yourself so be prepared to read a lot of old forum threads (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/).

Here's a good starting point - http://www.newreleasesvideo.com/hinsdale-how-to/index9.html

PM me if you have questions. I think it's been almost a year since I applied the hacks but I'll do my best to help.

I don't have one. I've thought about adding a DVR to our Dish setup, but haven't done it yet.

I have 2 Tivos in my household. The wife fell in love with the first one and then demanded a second for the bedroom. Thinking about adding a MCE box, just need to find the time and parts to do it.

It hasn't been a grand in months. Directv is now selling them for $299 with a $100 credit.
