I just got one last month for my wife's birthday. She keeps telling me that I didn't buy it for her...

I love it, but now I end up watching so much more TV... but I guess that's not horrible. I get to see all the stuff I want to see and without commercials.

not all Tivo's can get or have Basic Tivo.

If you buy a Tivo unit and either don't register it, or let the subscription lapse. What does it do? What units don't support Basic Tivo?

it becomes a doorstop. Series 1 units allowed you to manually record like a VCR, but IIRC the Series 2 have stopped that. Only DVD units came with Tivo Basic, and I beleive it has been phased out all together now.

I hear they make alright boat anchors too :D

I think the series 1 Tivo's acting like a VCR was disabled with a software update - pretty sure you have to subscribe to the service now unless you have a device with Basic (which like you said, aren't being made anymore).

Tivo is the greatest thing ever for students in college. I can't usually watch shows I like when they air, but I can time shift them and watch a couple each day.

ReplayTV here. Started with a 3030 that I need to sell. Later got a 5040 so I could use it in Canada. Recently got a 5516 (to record conflicts) using the Hot Deal that was posted recently.

2 40hr units - both were FAR. My 2 yr old modded one died and TiVo is replacing it free of charge. I lose the recorded programs but gain a new unit. I hate being down to one while waiting for the replacement. :|

Just the standard tivo hacks. I swapped out the old HD for a 160GB so I have way more recording time. I can also extract video from the Tivo to my PC, and then convert it to whatever format I want.

Had a Tivo was my third one and it started to die so I built my own PVR using 2 Hauppauge 500's, 1 Terabyte of storage and Sage TV works great ;)

I've got a SA TiVo at my apartment and 2 DirecTV TiVo's at my parent house (hacked and networked together)

I'm sure I could have made a nice DVR from a windows box, but at the time I didn't think about it.
