Don't have it yet, but I hear its pretty handy if you watch a lot of TV. Would have come in use during the Angels vs. Yankees games.

How does the no monthly fees bit work?
No tivo ... just satellite. Don't watch enough to bother investing in Tivo right now, though I might get it for Christmas for my wife

the SD-400 came with Tivo Basic. It won't let you do most of the better stuff, like setting season passes, etc., just record off the guide menu.

ahahno TiVo here... only bunny ears anyway. no cable, no sat
I own two and gave my fiancee one for Christmas. I've got hers modded up to 100GB and I've got one 80GB and the SD-H400. I'm a little addicted. I just wish that companies would have stopped selling 5400RPM HDs because the 7200RPM drives are too loud.
Basic Tivo is free no matter what Tivo-based DVR you have...
