How many of you have made your own Kit Car?

I made a Kelmark in 1980. It's fully operational but it's been in the garage most of the time ~5,000 miles. It only has a warmed over 1641 single port VW in it. Estimated top speed about 115 (85 mph speedo).

I have lost interest in it over the years but the wife told me to move it so... This weekend I am finishing up adding front disc brakes. This is in preparation for a much modified (VW based) 2180, dual 48 Dillorto's, SCAT flanged crank with Chevy length Carello Rods. This engine has been on my work bench for over 5 years.

SCAT says it should do low to mid 13's in the quarter, even though this is meant to be a street car. They also warned me not to do wheel stands (too heavy). That would look funny in a Ferrari 246/Porch 904 replica wouldn't it?


Anyone else got a project car?
 
Helped a neighbor a few years ago build a Shelby Cobra from a Mustang chassis. It was suppose to take 6 weeks but took two and a half years!
 
I saw this Fiero converted to a Testarossa. Pretty real...except when you look at the tiny engine. He even got his interior redone.

Mine took about 6 mons. not bad when you consider that we (#1 son & I) rebuilt everything (engine chassis, trans, suspension...). Cost about $10K in 1980 dollars.

Great sense of accomplishment.

The Fiero makes a great donor car. If you can still find one at a reasonable price.

I use to be a member of "The Grand Touring Sports Car Club" when I lived in Royal Oak Mi. One of the members took a 911 and put one of those Gull Wing door Bodies on it. It was nice but very expen$ive.

Another member took the Kelmark Kit and added a Buick V6. Talk about wheel stands. but for some reason it was hard to steer when airborne. 😉
 
I've always wanted to build a Cobra, but alas, I have neither the time nor the money.

I once saw a Fiero converted to a Countach...it had a ridiculous nitro system, but the engine looked like a hamster on a wheel! 🙂
 
Cobra replicas are nice. But not as nice as the real deal.

I could kick myself for not getting a 427 Cobra in 1966. Cost about $4,500 then for the roadster. Bought a new Mustag convertable instead.
 
When I was in high school (early 90s), my friend's uncle had an original cobra. I only got to ride in it once before he sold it and bought a BMW 850csi...which my friend got to drive to prom. What was his uncle thinking??? 🙂
