Woah ... I just gave one to my friend last week for his b-day. That DVD drive is freaking sweet, I loooooove slot load. If they made a slot load burner I'd snatch one up so freakin' quick...

Oh, and of course since he was getting one I figured I might as well buy one for myself as well :D.

I don't own a television nor a VCR, but I do own a 21" Trinitron monitor and a DVD-ROM drive. You do the math :)

because I can make divxs of movies I own to store and watch on my laptop when I'm using the floppy/dvd-drive bay for an extra battery instead.

Soon as the cost to stamp DVDs goes down to where its the same or cheaper than multiple CDs, computer software will make the switch to DVDs. Until then its not going to happen. 4-6 CDs are cheaper to make than 1 DVD.

My G4/933 came with a DVD-ROM (and DVD-R.. Ahh Superdrive. :D). My gaming rig has a DVD-ROM just because. I was going to go with a 52x CD-ROM, but for the extra $5 I paid, it was worth getting the DVD-ROM.

Several reasons. The main one is it was cheaper than a DVD player, especially since I bought it instead of a CD-ROM drive. Also I have TV-out so I can use it with my HT if I want, and finally my monitor is 1" smaller than my 11 year old TV. Oh, and I have 27 DVD's so I need something to play them on:p

I have a Pioneer 16x DVD drive. I did not have a DVD player for my TV when I built my computer and I want to be able to watch DVDs.

I have a dvd-rom because.... i don't have to buy a tv, dvd player, and a whole nother' sound system just to waste money on. Maybe when i have a steady job i will get a plasma screen and a sweet system, but for college life- this is all i have. Oh btw, i have a tv-tuner in as well so i can watch tv.

Because i can.

Three reasons (for me that is):

1. Firmware region cracks are widely available. Even though I live in Japan (region 2) I can watch Region 1 DVD's from the US. Not many set-top DVD players can do that (unless it's some dodgy Chinese model).

2. Different TV-systems are not a problem. I am originally from Hungary, but currently live in Japan. Hungary (like most of Europe) has PAL, while Japan (and the US) are use NTSC TV systems. With a regular DVD-player you cannot play discs that are encoded in a different TV system. However, PC monitors do not care about TV systems, plus you can pop in a PAL DVD in a PC, use your video out to hook it up to an NTSC TV, and let the computer take care of the frame rate and resolution differences. If it weren't for computer DVD-drives, I would not be able to play DVD's from Hungary.

3. Sooner or later the disc media of choice will be DVD's. Some games are already available on DVD. One of the PC magazines I get frequently comes with a DVD. While DVD data discs are not that common just yet, it's good to have access to them.

I have mine to watch DVD's. I don't have a DVD player hooked up to my TV, and I watch alot of DVD's, so why not? The DVD-ROM I got wasn't that much more expensive than a CD-ROM.

originally, because at the time i initially bought my DVDrom, standalone DVD players were several hundrud dollars more than DVDrom drives. Currently i have one because sometimes i like to watch movies in my room. my PC outputs to a 27in TV.

I have a DVD-ROM drive in all four of my computers and all four computers are by TV sets. DVD Drive and a Hollywood Plus costs about $60. I don't own a stereo system to hook a set top dvd into. for me it's a much cheaper solution.

Why the 16x Pioneer slot in my workhorse here?

Gordian. Knot. 'Nuff said.

Why the 16x Pioneer tray in my living room comp?

$20. Free 21" monitor. Entertainment for a fellow without television. :D

I have a DVD-ROM in my laptop and in one of my desktop computers. Mainly to watch DVDs when needed. The first piece software I received on DVD was from Microsoft. Visual Studio .NET trial comes on DVD, and I have seen other Microsoft products on DVD as well.
