i've been trying to figure this out lately. i just replaced my old toshiba 4x with a slick pioneer 16x slot loader, but that's 'cause i hook up my computer to my tv to watch dvds, divx, etc. virtually no one else i know does that with their dvd-roms, sooo, why are they so common place? i can understand why they'd be now, with dvd burners, but for the past 5 years most people i know bought computers with dvd-roms... hmm... :-/

I bought my dvd-rom because I watch dvd's on my pc, both on the monitor and on a tv I occasionally hook up to the pc. I see a couple of reasons why so many people have them these days:

1. Most oem systems include them as standard equipment.
2. They are not much more expensive than regular cd rom drives, so it make sense to get one.

I watch movies on my computer, and I've been hoping more multi-CD games would become available on DVD, like Baldur's Gate 2 was.

I guess the rumour is that once games and programs become larger they will be written on dvd disks...?

Originally, I had a Creative CDrom drive I paid $40 for. It never worked, but I had a warrantee, and when I brought it back there was a DVD-rom drive for $20 more. I thought, "what the hell" and paid the difference for it.

I don't have a DVD player, and my TV is right by my computer, and my video card has an S-video out, so I can play DVD movies on my TV, and use my good PC speaker system for the audio.

Also, software is getting so BIG in size now, game producers will start moving to DVD-ROM as the standard to put their games on. I figured that was also a good reason for buying a DVD-ROM.

I guess...uh...

I know lots of people that hook their computers up to their TVs to watch stuff. Me and my roommate both do...

Or if you've got a nice big monitor just watch it on there...

I'm confused...I dunno what you want.

i guess it didn't make much sense to ask this question here, because people here with dvd-roms bought them because they'd use them. my point is, it seems weird that they've been available for so long though, when all that most people do with them is watch movies... which is only marginally cheaper than a stand alone dvd player that could be hooked up to a much larger tv (sign you might be an at nerd #4: if your monitor is larger than your tv, you might be an at nerd ;))... but cds are still the standard when it comes to software, not dvds. oh well.

Considering the price difference between a CD-ROM and a DVD-ROM, why not?

When I'm unable to wear contacts I watch movies on my PC (I can sit very close to it), plus if I feel like ripping a DVD I can do it.

I use my dvd-rom for watching movies via my hollywood plus dvd decoder card. This is hooked up to my tv via a wireless x10 A/V sender which can send audio/video anywhere in the house with ease, so mine gets a lot of use.

I watch dvds on my computer sometimes because my computer speakers (Z560's :D) are way better than the speakers on my POS tv.

I got a Toshiba 16x DVD drive for free, and my 19" monitor isn't much smaller than my 25" TV, and my computer has the best speakers in the house. However, I've only got one DVD anyhow, SpongeBob SquarePants. :D

Same price as a new CD-rom drive, which I needed.

So I got a DVD drive. 16x Pioneer Slot Loader.
