I have a cheapo tripod already but I seldomly use it. It sure does come in handy where I need long-exposure or ultra steady shots, but the chance are like 5% of all the shots I've taken.

the reason I asked is because of that "laptop/camera bag" thread (here) and I am deciding whether to jump on the Kata + Bogen Monopod deal or the Lowepro 250. (both between $80-90).

depends on what lens you plan on using it with, i have the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS (3.1 lbs / 1,380g
) but its not that heavy i normally just hand hold it

but if i had for say the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM (5.6 lbs. /2,550g) i would

i also was looking at the kata deal and decided to go with the lowepro instead

I got the Manfrotto 679B and it works out well when shooting at night in crowded places. That being said, I probably have used it more as a walking stick than as a monopod.

Monopods are handy and are easy to toss into a suitcase for travel. I use mine in low light situations, long telephoto shots, and like Jawo, as a hiking stick. It also can be a defensive weapon. :)
