Finalized my divorce, got out of the huge house we were in by finishing up a deed in lieu of foreclosure, and paid off all my consumer debt.

I'd like to think I've turned a corner.

Finally finished college in May.
Got a job in the field, and now I basically get paid to screw around with electrical and mechanical gadgets, design new ones, and do some programming as well. It's kind of like I'm getting paid to do stuff I'd normally occupy my time with at home. :)
They just make me wake up before 8am.

"Life changing"? I don't know if that's quite the right descriptor though; I'm definitely in a better mood just getting done with the unpleasantness of college. Having a job is nice too, especially one that finally affords me the ability to buy more than just the necessities (internet included, of course).

Maybe more like "reasonably according to plan."

"Life changing" would probably be something more along the lines of "get a girlfriend," "start a meth lab," "expand social life beyond ATOT," that sort of thing. ;)

Man, I sincerely hope that you find a job soon. It's no fun being out of work especially when you have to pay bills and have a family to take care of.

Grad school.

There may be light at the end of the tunnel, but it's an exceptionally long tunnel. ;)

Left my job to get a Ph.D.

This involved a move from Houston to Ithaca, NY, breaking up with the girlfriend, and a major paycut (at least I'm still getting paid).

We'll see how it works out. So far so good.

Cornell? I have a friend in a PhD program up there.

Mind the swine flu.

sure.

started a new job this year and I'm on track to lose 200 pounds before the end of the year  started the year off weighing 400+ and, as of this morning, am down to 224.

DUDE! Are you serious? I totally did not know that.
For some reason I always pictured you as a skinny, tall mother fucker. Were you a skinny bastard in high school or something?

nope. I was always big, though it really exploded during college and my "lost years" immediately following college when my college roommate and I moved in together and pretty much did nothing for 3 years but work, smoke pot, eat junk food, and play video games... weighed 224 this morning, which is roughly about what I remember weighing freshman year of high school.

not tall either :p 5'10" on a good day, though my doc martens give me a couple extra inches. lol.

You'll get there soon. I'm the same height as you and I used to weigh 230lbs. Now I'm around 168lbs or so.
It's a great feeling isn't it? Feeling good about yourself that is.

Enjoyed reading other people's successes in making major changes. It's always been difficult for me to do so, & I've made some important ones in the last year. Inspiring to read others' accounts!

1. Quit smoking December 23rd 2008. Been that long now. Had smoked nine years.
2. Broke up with a vampiric gf in January.
3. Got hired as a lecturer (big step up in academia from TA) for the summer course.
4. Started exercising daily & made enormous diet changes in mid August. Down from 234 to 205 as of this morning.
Hopefully 5. Started dating a new girl a few weeks ago; first one since 2...very excited so far.

The year started off sucking monkey butt, but ...

1. Moved back to NYC with the gf and soon-to-be 1 yr daughter
2. $0.00 savings and checking is in double digits right now, but putting $500 into my savings account this friday's payday & all will be well
3. Finally made the gf see sense why it's pointless to stay pissed off at me for more than 3 hours ... whew
4. Still have my job and hoping that the company wide salary freeze will be gone soon - a raise and the quarterly bonus would be be nice

Life's looking up again

Pretty shitty year... If I look at all the bad that has happened and compare it to the good... well, it would make any normal man commit suicide.

Good stuff I can think of at this moment:

Picked up swing dancing...
Met some new people...

Uhm, I guess I got some good grades in my 3 classes I took.

Learned a lot. :) Although, nothing that really makes it worth that trublez...

I had a lot of plans, but they all backfired miserably due to circumstances out of my control.

1) I started making real money again.
2) I drink about 20% of what I used to.
3) I am falling in love with my wife all over again.
4) It looks like our adoption is getting closer.
5) I feel good about myself, and I am loosing weight.

For this first time, in a long time, I am optomistic about the future.

I want all of you to know that no matter how bad things look, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, I swear it. It's there if you work for it.

great for you!

wished i was in the same boat.

it's same old same old.. making tons of $$$. job secure for at least the next 2 yrs.
no debt (except mortgage), etc, etc

Nothing really changed EXCEPT I met a girl I am in love with. It's only been a couple months so far but we are crazy about each other. I think she might be the one.

That much has more than made up for the general mediocrity of the other things I did this year.
