I have not done this much, but the few times I've dabbled, it's worked. A lot of online retailers will sell out on items they have too much stock of/are discontinuing. I bought several pairs of shoes once that were inexplicably cheap and sold on ebay for a profit and recently with some electronics that I knew were well below market price and the site was just desperately trying to offload. I recall that PAB does this or used to on a grand scale.
One certainly wants to avoid doing it for things that are "overly geeked". For example, if a popular discount site lists cheap harddrives, it's safe to assume people will hit up officemax, grab the thing, and ebay it, so there will be a temporary deluge of the item on Ebay.
