I type all letters correctly, I'm not very good about using the correct shift key, and I have to look for the numbers & uncommon punctuation.

Can do pushing 100 wpm on tests as long as it's just basic letters & punctuation. Numbers mixed with text slow me down significantly, but for straight numeric input I can 10-key about as well as I can type.

I'm a sloppy "traditional" typer. My right hand was in cast most of my Freshman typing class. I had no range of motion laterally or really veritically for my fingers and learned some really horrible habits.

To this day I still use my left hand for all shift, space, alt, and ctrl key use since I couldn't get my pinking on my right hand to do that.

Yeah when I typed regularly on a normal keyboard, I could hit 100+ WPM. On my laptop (which I use mostly now), it's maybe 75% of that, at best.

I used to think I was a traditional typer, but I've found out I'm definitely not. My hands fly around the keyboard because I don't really use my ring or pinkie fingers. Instead I use my index and middle fingers primarily to hit about 95% of the keys. Weird, I guess but it works for me.

The traditional way is much faster than any other method, and I suggest people at least give it a shot. If you stick to traditional, your typing speed WILL go up.

Although I never use the caps lock key, I will always shift even for longer lines. I guess that's technically not traditional?

No, it's not. How could you even come to this opinion? Did you feel this way about all of your school subjects or was there some reason for this?

The Dvorak layout is supposed to be faster, but it kind of screws you up when you have to type on a QWERTY keyboard.

I learned how to type the proper way, but I've definitely adapted it to fit my hands and my rather poor control of my pinky fingers.

I started learning from Meavis Beacon teaches typing, and pretty much stopped using it I could accurately type without looking. The result is that my right pinky finger is mainly used to hit shift and enter now. I still have to look down for most punctuations, and my right ring finger hits all of the keys that my pinky probably should.

I also never use the left shift key.

I type with three fingers per hand, and use the pinkies to hold shift keys and things like that. I do rest my hands in the traditional positions.

Traditional, with the very occassional change-up. For example, I never use the right shift bar, so I type a capital A with my left pinky and left ring fingers.

Exactly the same. I mostly only hit space with my left thumb, and I use my right hand for b (which makes for awkward typing on split keyboards). I also never use right shift, EXCEPT when I need to do a question mark - then I'd move my right hand down to use my right ring to shift and right index to ?.

Hello sir, are you me? Everything you describe is exactly the same as how I do it. I probably started typing B with my right hand because my name starts with Br. Easier to type that with two fingers than with one. I've never liked split keyboards because of that. It'd be nice if they put the B key on both sides of the keyboard.

Get out. The worlds fastest typers can do 130-150 wpm.

Ring: A
Pinky: Shift

Right Hand:

since i use mini-keyboards, my hands are too big to do the traditional typing. i just use my two fingers.

it's not very fast. maybe 50 wpm...

if/when i buy a new desk, i'm gonna buy a das keyboard to go with it, and then i'll learn proper typing.

traditional ftw. I tried dvorak, but I haven't had a chance

i just checked
http://www.typeonline.co.uk/typingspeed.php
95wpm. i made 6 mistakes
typingtest.com gave me a speed of 88wpm

if i didn't type using the homerow method, my speed would drop to 40-50wpm...i can't finger type at all. of course, real world, my typing speed is probably closer to 40wpm because I'm spending more time thinking about what i want to write...almost never do i rotely copy something on paper

I'm probably traditional, at least in the sense the OP is talking about.

I learned during high school at home on a typewriter. Not that computers weren't around, just cheaper.

I type with a max of 4 fingers (for at least 30 +years) and can do at least 100wpm with 95% accuracy. I started typing when I first started working at Wang (yes, my IT career started long before it was called IT) so I learned to type the computer geek way. :) It has served me wll and I will not or really cannot type any other way.

..would Dvorak be better for single finger peckers like me??:D

The traditional keyboard layout was created to slow typists down so the arms on the typewritter didn't get jammed together. Go figure.

Not traditional.

I use my two index fingers and my left thumb to type everything. I can type faster than most anyone I know.

Surprised how many of you use DVORAK, that looks nuts.

So 'home row' = traditional?

no, it wasnt created to "slow typists down". it was created to allow for faster typing without binding of the arms.
