How many of you Anandtech members are on the Dell?

I have a 700m laptop and Parents have a 4700. The worst thing about them is the software that they pre-load. Some systems that i've purchased had 256mb of ram, and the pc is super slow with all the running apps, especially with mcafee antivirus. The best thing to do is reload the system from scratch. I've had zero problems with my Dells. A couple of weeks ago I sold my 8400 and bought a 700m laptop, runs great.

i consider myself a PC Enthusiast and i think when it's time to upgrade i'll get a dell rather than build one myself like i did. getting a dell doesn't mean i can't put new parts in there you know.

When it's cheaper to buy a turn-key box, for less than you can buy the parts. There's NOTHING to stop you from upgrading a pre-built. But, paying more money for the same parts, just for the sake of playing with hardware, is something only kids (and immature adults) would do.

So, just because it's more expensive to custom make one like you want, that makes it stupid to do? Can you get a Dell with anything other than Intel stuff? Can you pick an aftermarket case? What if you want a certain CPU/mobo combo that Dell doesn't offer?

Why would I want to buy a pre-built Dell and start changing stuff out? If you want a A64, which is faster than any Intel stuff with the possible exception of video encoding last I checked, and I wanted a PC that used standard memory like DDR instead of no faster, but more expensive and propietary DDR2? You seem to totally forget o take into account that Dell pretty much only offers a fraction of what's out there to build with.

Of course, your definition of "upgrading" probably involves adding a HD or swapping out an optical drive...

My primary and only system is a Dell Inspiron 8200. Had it for three years next month with no complaints. Definitley would buy a Dell laptop again and might even buy a Dell tower whenever I decide to switch back to a desktop system. My aunt has a Dimension 3000 from the Small Business deal a few weeks ago and I'm quite surprised at how well done the tower is. Extremely quiet and really easy to access.

Using a 8250 that I got on that hot deal 3 years back. Its fast enough for 90% of the stuff I do. However I need more ram and RDRAM is expensive, that and the case fan broke and I dont feel like buying a new one from dell. Damn dell and their propeitary fan cords.
