i'd like to know how to tell if you have a migraine as well. i think i've had a couple before, but then again, headaches don't really bother me.

If it was a migrane, you wouldn't be posting because the light from the monitor and sound of the keyboard would be like sledgehammer whacks to your skull, eye, and brain.

headache=sucks

migrane=Your head hurts so bad that all you can do is lay in bed and pray that God strikes you dead as mercy because you are in so much pain that you couldn't get out of bed if the building was on fire.

yup, when my mom has migranes- she has to go to bed. Lights off, no sound, and lay there for a few hours for it to be bearable.

There's two main classes of migraine:

Cluster - Like a Headache from Hell, concentrated in the forehead.
Ocular - "Of or pertaining to the eyes" ... I can't think of a more appropriate analogy than "Skull-Fvcking" from Satan's pecker itself.

Edit - And yes, I've had both. They were both linked to food allergies though. Get checked.

well, i get the light sensitivity and nausea and dizziness, but not the pain you guys are talking about.
when lying in bed in silence and if a sound suddenless breaks out, i see a flash of light (eyes closed) and it gets me wide awake.

I see an aura, then an hour or so later I start to feel intense nausea.
Then I throw up for the next 4 hours or so.
Then I lay in bed for another 8 hours or so wishing that I were dead.

When I get a headache, my head just hurts a little bit. :)

Migraines = suck. Mine are triggered if I push myself too hard playing sports or something. Hurt like a MOTHER. Even walking around makes it throb bad, and don't even think about fapping.

I had a few of them in a period of about six months. Fortunately, I haven't had one in years.

I always knew when they were coming because I'd start seeing spots. Eventually I'd be almost blind, and that's when the real pain would start.

Only vomited once and that was because I was in a moving vehicle with my mother at the time. Her habit of rapidly accelerating and slamming on the brakes was just too much. ;)

Nowadays I occasionally get bad headches, but the worst are the ones that constantly and instantly appear and disappear in a span of 5 seconds and last for a period of two days. I still consider myself lucky compared to some people, though.

I used to get them all the time.
I started watching what I eat (NO MSG) and I stopped getting them! :)

i do... for 25 years.

you seem to have some indicators. See your doctor,
he may ask you to keep a headache journal - explore
your family history - maybe refer you to a Nerologist.

may not be migraine though... i'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

ever since I had a concussion as a boy, I have been getting migraines. Everytime I get one, I just want to die.

Mine are so bad, that any noise, light, movement, just amplifies the pain, and it is already way to painful to sleep. My head throbs like a nail is being driven into it every few seconds, too painful to do anything, including walk/sleep/die. Yes, too painful to die.

I had then when I was a kid, but haven't had them for ages now. I've walked home from school totally on my knowledge of the road at least once, where the pain had gotten so intense that it was black in front of my eyes eventhough it was midday in the summer, and that sweat was literally streaming down. I used to puke a lot when it happened too, and the only thing that gave some comfort was (by the time I had finished emptying my stomach) to lie in total darkness on my bed with a cold wet napkin on my forehead. I used to be scared sh!tless whenever I got a seemingly normal headache as it might turn out to become an actual migraine attack.

I've not had them for about 20 years now I think, but I can easily recognize migraine attacks in others. You know the way your eyes look drawn inwards, and can see when others show those symptoms. At least one colleague has attacks once in a while, and a few friends of mine do too.

Edit: The advantage of having had a migraine a while as kid but not having it afterwards anymore is that normal headaches don't bother you anymore. When normal people cannot work anymore you just keep on going as you can close yourself to light pain more easily.

I used to get one every six months so bad that I would violently vomit. I had vitamine B deficiency. Doc told me to go pick up some B12 and take a pill a day. I've been fine ever since. :)

I never get headaches unless I wack my head on something (happens more than I wish it did). I guess I count myself lucky in that respect.

You might be able to compare headache vs migraine to someone stepping on your foot and you going 'ouch!', but forgetting it 10 seconds later again, and someone repeatedly hitting your foot with a sledgehammer until no bones are left unbroken, then proceeding with the other foot.

basically migraines often start with a visual problem. a blurry spot, blind spot, wavy line in your vision. sometimes like when you look at something bright, except in this case you didn't. then the spot can get bigger till it covers your whole vision. this isn't necessary though. then the headache starts. you get sensitive to light. can get nauseated as the pain gets worse, cept vomitting doesn't alleviate the pain or the nausea like when your sick. you have to just lie down in quiet and the dark, even though lying down actually makes it worse. cold is BAD for a migraine, don't use an ice pack, heat is better, but i haven't found it to work at all. doctors have tried to show me relaxation and other techniques... well they don't work either. it's just a excruciating headache that doesn't compare to a normal one, and it can last from several hours to 2 or 3 days. luckily mine are only hours. the next day i feel 'hungover'.
i tried imitrex, and it worked the first few times, now it does nothing. the best OTC remedy i've found is a combo of Ibuprofen and caffeine. we're talking not a can of soda, but a vivarin here. excedrin isnt bad either, since it has multiple ingredients. other than that i can only beat one by falling asleep before the onset of the headache...
i hate migraines, can you tell?

the pain sounds scary.
but the fact that i dont' get much pain means i might have something else unknown.
blah, don't know which is worse. not knowing what it is, or it being a mild migraine.

i used to get migraines all the time and read that you can 'block' them out mentally.

The medicine they gave me made me sick so I'd rather just tough them out.

I would get 'blindness' in my left eye (flashing lights), it would start off like a dot and my mouth would feel slightly numb/lips tinglely.

Slowly the flashing lights would grow until I couldn't see clearly, even closing my eyes I still 'saw' the flashing.

Then a major headache would set in and last for a few days to a week (dull after the first day, but still sucked).

I tried the plan to just phase it out. It eventually worked. Now when I get the migraines I just think about not thinking about it and although I can't see for about 15-45 mins it quickly passes.

I don't know if I am just imagining not feeling the pain or really not experiencing pain....either way it worked for me.

There are other types of head pain as well that have the same symptoms as a Migraine, but are not .

My wife, for the past 7-8 years, has been cursed with constant (and I do, literally, mean constant) Migraine-like pain. 24 hours a day. 7 days a week her pain is between 7-10 on a scale of 1-10. She has the nausea/vomiting, sensitivity to light, aura and pain in the right rear of her head. He headaches are caused by Occipital Neuaralgia. Trauma to the main nerve that runs up the right-rear of your head. We have no idea the cause.

Migraines, on the other hand, are vascular. They are caused by the constriction of the blood vessels within the brain.

There are migraine attacks where you get visual disturbances,
light sensitivity, etc but don't get the pain. It's just another
form of migraine.

Like i said, go see a doctor and start down the road to getting
some questions answered.

I'm glad you can just "not think" about your migraines, and they
go away... but it kind of trivializes the condition for those of us
who are constant sufferers that don't get much relief from the
medicine/bio feedback offered today.

...sorry if i'm being touchy, but there are a lot of misconceptions
about Migraine - a lot of people who equate them with standard
aspirin headaches - lots of dirty looks from co-workers - Bosses
who are total asses - significant others that just don't understand -
missed social occations - ruined vacations - people who think you're
a head case - i could go on and on...
