Well I have been to some pretty seedy places on the web and Never had an infection, Ever!
But then again I am careful and I do run an AV program ( MS Security Essentials at the moment).

How many have you had?

I think you mean problems with websites being successfully attacked by sql injections. Result of that is what you are scared of. Redirections, iframes, obfuscated java script.

Pdf and flash exploits which might pop up if server is hosed and work really well with old versions should not be underestimated. Has a life of their own - but most fears are bogus No real reason to be scared of "internet" but of course depends on who is navigating. Not like there is a lack of options for getting in to trouble.

I do every time but I run sandboxie. I did a test with it where I had no protections running, no pop up blockers and went to every bug ridden web site I could find. I was deliberately out to break it. I installed malware, antivirus malware, everything I could find. The poor window that contained the browser was covered in popups, malware, etc. Closed it, told sandboxie to delete changes, clicked open on the browser , and all that garbage was gone like nothing ever changed.

Sandboxie or a VM is brilliant, can't complain about ease of use any more. But if so scared it means every time you connect it should be through those 100% safe "filters". Kind of crazy bordering on being in violation with common sense. "Oh I only use it when visiting porn sites because I have heard they are risky!" does not count since just about any website can have malicious content - includes Google ads and they are everywhere. 3rd party ad-servers are also on every other site. Risks, risks... If computer and usage is not out of control I don't see much use for Sandboxie but very cool for allowing high usability while remaining paranoid
