how many miles do oil filters last?

using synthetic, i go anywhere between 7500 - 10000 miles.
but are the oil filters good for that long as well?

if i'm changing the oil filter, i might as well change the oil too.

A good one will be fine for that long. Mobil 1, Pure 1, or the newer Fram Extended Guard.

Not the plain Fram orange or the Fram Extra Guard.

All of the BMW and M-B cars I have owned used full synthetic oil. The on board engine management systems generally called for oil/filter changes every 10K miles. I have to assume that the factory filters were good for that long or there would be a lot of engine failures. I cannot speak to other brands of filters but I'd bet there are others that are just as good.

many oil labs will check filters also. The problem with filters, if they get too contaminated they can operate in bypass mode which means they no longer filter.

Filters change all the time. I used to buy supertech or AC Delco because they were sturdy, and if you looked down the middle of the filter, there was a perforated metal layer protecting the entire filter membrane. Last purchase, I noticed that they went with a couple of metal bands, with about 75% of the membrane left susceptible to collapse. I had to move to a bosch filter (2-3x more $) to get the same build that I used to get. meh...thoughts?

Supertech? Yeah you're asking for it with that one But I had an AC Delco previous to my current Mobil 1 filter (got it on a sweet combo deal $30 for 5 quarts mobil 1 oil and a filter) and it was a metal layer inside.

They have, for the most part, always been made by Champ Labs.

Teh current ones are not "shit". They are a new design called Ecore. The inside tube is actually stronger then the thin metal it replaced. No it is not the best filter but I have put 10k or so on them and they were still in good shape and not in bypass mode.

Use manufacturer recommendations on filter changes, and use OEM filters FTW.

The better tier AC Delco are not "shit", but you really should open the filter and inspect it before jumping to conclusions. When I switch filter brands, I always get one and cut it open to inspect it before I decide if I will use it or not.

I change my filter, usually Purolator Pure One, every 5000-7500 miles. Mobil 1 extended oil, 10W30. 203,000 miles on the engine, FWIW. Both prior owners used the same oil, filters, and drain interval according to the maintenance records and talking to them. Turbocharged engine too, original turbo, no center rebuild.

Maybe I'm stupid...but I've been changing my oil for years and years...how exactly do you plan on changing the filter without changing the oil?

You could just change the filter and top up and I have heard of people that do that . . . .
Considering how cheap dino oil is tho . . . . .

Maybe his filter is a top mount? I don't know if it is true for all Benz (though I don't see why they would be different) but on my MB E350, the filter is actually a drop in filter type. There is no outer metal casing and the filter just screws into the cavity. It's like 5 inch from the grill sitting on the front/top of the engine.
