I'd really like to hear why people think smoking is not any worse than drinking soda. Have you guys been beaten with an atkins diet book or something?

I highly doubt smoking is worse than drinking soda.

Would you want any of those symptoms happening to you?
Keep us posted.

Dr. Joseph Mercola is ANYTHING but respectable. He is a quack of the highest order.

Again:

There is not a single peer reviewed study supporting ANY of this quacks claims. None.

There is science, and then there is fear mongering quackery. Mercola is all about the later.

And the funny part is, his entire site is set up to instill fear, have you distrust mainstream medicine and have you buy his products.

It's a bloody fscking cult.

Respectable?

Even if you are correct, the inclusion of ad hominem arguementation weakens your statements. And there ARE many reasons to distrust mainstream medicine.

Um, that's not a study, it's an editorial.

It continues to spread fear and conjecture while grudgingly admitting no study has found harm.

It's bullsh!t.

Not only that, but right above that posted editorial is one by who else? Joseph M Mercola!

The cult quack.

Sorry, try agin.

Um, OK? 😕

at a time me and my brother drank 8 liters combined.

With water I have drank 4 or so Double Gulps a day easy.

Beer along with the coke, water....I have thrown out 100+ beers in a week (I did work from home though)...

For me it's probably an oral fixation thing.

Hello.

Those are responses to an editorial written by independent scientists familiar with the research.

> There is not a single peer reviewed study supporting ANY of this quacks claims. None.

Aspartame ingestion in relatively small amounts leads to formaldehyde accumulation in brain, liver, etc.:

"These are indeed extremely high levels for adducts of formaldehyde, a substance responsible for chronic deleterious effects that has also been considered carcinogenic.
....
"It is concluded that aspartame consumption may constitute a hazard because of its contribution to the formation of formaldehyde adducts."
[Life Sciences (peer reviewed), Vol. 63, No. 5, pp. 337+, 1998]

A summary of the published research related to the effects of chronic formaldehyde exposure can be found in this section of an online document:
http://www.holisticmed.com/aspartame/scf2002-response.htm#_Toc31281403

Aspartame causes migraines/headaches (two peer-reviewed, independent studies):

Koehler, SM, A. Glaros, 1988. "The Effect of Aspartame on Migraine Headache," Headache, Volume 28, page 10-14.
Van Den Eeden, S.K., et al., 1994. "Aspartame Ingestion and Headaches: A Randomized Crossover Trial," Neurology, Volume 44, pages 1787-1793.

Aspartame use linked to fibromyalgia (peer reviewed):
Smith, J.D., C.M. Terpening, S. Schmidt, J. Gums, 2001. "Relief of Fibromyalgia Symptoms Following Descontinuation of Dietary Excitotoxins," Annals of Pharmacotherapy, Volume 35, pages 702-706, 2001.

Aspartame and depression-related symptoms (peer reviewed):
Walton, Ralph G., 1993. "Adverse Reactions to Aspartame: Double-Blind Challenge in Patients from a Vulnerable Population," Biological Psychiatry, Volume 34, pages 13-17, 1993.
Etc.
There are many independent studies linking aspartame use to various symptoms and conditions. A preliminary review of several hundred study outcomes as related to their funding source was compiled by a scientist. Someone transcribed his findings and put them on this web page:
http://www.dorway.com/peerrev.html

Statements by numerous independent experts and some government scientists has been transcribed and put on various web pages such as:

The Snopes people are well-meaning, but a computer programmer and self-described housewife are not necessarily the best sources for scientific information on controversial products. Here is a short discussion on the Snopes forum:
http://msgboard.snopes.com/cgi-bin/ulti...bb/get_topic/f/76/t/000173.html#000000
I believe that independent researchers tend to be the best resource for information on scientific subjects, but only if they are intimately familiar with the research.

there was a time when I could down a 2-liter a night. I have since all but given up on soda, now I drink it maybe once a month tops.
