How many IDE hard drives are possible to hook up?

So here's my situation:

2xIDE hard drives, 2xCD-ROM, Shuttle AN51R (2 IDE inputs on mobo).

Is there room for another IDE hard drive or two, or do I HAVE to go SATA or external USB?

I want an extra hard drive. Fry's has a 160GB IDE for $50 after MIR, but also has a 250GB SATA for $120 after MIR. I would like to go for the 160GB because performance difference between SATA and IDE is negligable and the 160GB is cheaper per GB. But if only 2 IDE drives are supported as max, I would have to get an IDE-SATA adapter for the 160GB and it wouldn't be worth it compared to the 250GB SATA.

grab a PCI ATA controller card, I see them in FS/FT for $10 all the time.

Errr... edit what out? 😕

If I get a controller card with 2 IDE inputs does that mean I can have a max of 4 IDE hard drives on the controller card, or do they only support one hard drive per input?

Why do I have the feeling "input" isn't the right word?

Yes, most controller cards give you 2 controllers with 2 devices per controller=4 hdds.

Thanks for the reply.

Edit out the whole thread? Meh, I deserve to look retarded for my question, WHICH was thought of in haste BTW. Yeah, ignore the whole "I've always wondered this" title. It was in haste.
