How many hours a day do you really work?

For those of you with 8-5 or 9-6 jobs, how many hours a day do you really "work" and perform the duties your position requires?

I had a friend who interned at a financial instutution over the summer, and he worked HARD for eight hours every day. This resulted in a significant amount of animosity directed towards him, as he outperformed his mentors/superiors... and he felt that was because he actually worked the full day as opposed to checking his e-mail half the day as his coworkers did.

Personally... I get things done, but I know I could work harder...

I trink it depends on what you are doing. If you are given a crappy task and you are falling asleep at your desk then you can't concentrate for long, but if you are doing what you love doing then time flies by!

I guess my answer is, under normal circumstances, 5-8.

It varies widely, some days as little as one or 2, some days 20ish, although those are few and far between. I'd say the average would be oh, maybe 4 or 5 hours.
