How many homeowners here have actually had a bad experience with their HOA?

I've dealt with a couple of HOA's.

The first one : Townhouse when I was a kid living with my folks. They were very hands off. They painted the home exteriors every 12 years (from regular hoa dues saved), maintained the pool, did the gardening, and weren't crazy nazi's about things. They weren't bad. They did try to maintain parking as 'guest' but you'd have to park in the same spot for 2 weeks before the finally said something.

The second one : This HOA was snooty and bad. Their fees were steep, but there wasn't much they had to do. They were condo's that didn't actually have lawns, yet they had gardner fees? The pool was never kept, and rarely swimable. They constantly had supplamental fees for things like "extra pool maintenance" when again.. that pool was terrible. This HOA had a very corrupt board that wouldn't listen to member complaints. The parking situation was terrible as you had to have this 8x11 permit that was just laminated paper on any non guest car parked in purchased parking spots. Oh yea, you had to pay for parking spots. If that permit wasn't there you were towed. IF the liscense plate didn't match the plate, you were towed. Thats right, no guest parking in the complex.

You were not allowed to do any work with anything exceeding an electric screw driver? That drill? Better stop using it. While they said this was a 'formality' just to set a standard, they really were sticklers about this. There was absolutely no car maintenance to be done in any hoa property or private garage. I can't change my car oil in my garage? Nope, here's a list of nearby places that can do it for you so you can abide by hoa standards. Thanks, but I'll change my oil thank you very much, I'm not pulling the engine out of my car, I'm changing the oil in my car, the same car i've done it for ever since i've owned it. I understand not wanting to see a car in repair when you drive home, but seriously, absolutely no car maintenance. I asked if this would cover headlight repair, they told me i should do that at the autostore parking lot or see a mechanic. Thanks.

My current HOA that I'm living isn't as bad as the second, not as good as the first. They are restrictive about parking, insisting permits be used but refusing to issue additional permits to anyone even for a fee. That means a family of 4 might end up with a 1 car garage, 1 car with permit, and 1 car outside all the time (2 if both kids drive). They also can't really have guests conviniently as any guest is warned, two warnings in a row is a tow.

They keep a nice pool, they do good gardening, the exteriors of the house look nice. One thing I found kinda shady is that there was some chimney maintenance that needed to be done and the HoA wouldn't do it saying it wasn't their responsibility. apparently the home owners had to sue the management company, and the city found in favor of the residents and told the hoa they had to fix it. The hoa then promptly sent out a letter raising everyones fees, which is being fought by the same group of residents. I'm renting here so I don't know all the details but that's what the letters we've been receiving/forwarding to the landlord say.

No cars parked on the street.
No cars parked in the driveway.
No toys/etc in the yard.

I have yet to see a sign of life in the place in the 20 years I've known it to exist.

I have friends who lived in a townhouse community that was pretty much the complete opposite, and I can't say I'd want to live in either place.

What does it matter if someone wants to park on their lawn? Some people have nothing to do than but into other's business.

I dislike HOA. Mine is too picky. We can only repaint with the exact same original color. I painted the front of my house last year. I couldn't find the exact same paint so I took some paint chips to the store and got a computer match but it wasn't close enough so I will have to repaint again this year. Luckily, I found a store that supposedly has the exact matching paint so I hope it's gonna meet with their approval.

Last year I got a notice that the types of flowers I planted in the front garden was inappropriate -- I have to plant evergreens there.

I have never lived in a place with a HOA. However, I have handled enough cases involving HOAs (including a doosy right now) that they scare me to death. I would really have to think twice about buying a place with a HOA as I have seen the worst of the worst.

I hate our HOA. Its a small condo complex, and we pay 150 / mo for basic cable, sewage, and water.

They are MEGA-ANAL about open flame BBQ's. We leave our small Weber grill (The smallest you can get) on our patio behind the fence so the only way you could see it is if you went and looked over our fence. The HOA people were mainly just trying to bitch us out because they hated us. One of our blinds (out of the 100's) was broken and we got lots of letters for that.

Our front entry way was dirty after a dust storm (AZ has really bad dust storms) and the next day they tell us to clean it.

They somehow blamed us one time for throwing cigarettes everywhere. We only got one of those letter and ignored it tho.

the main thing we got pissed about was them telling us to take stuff off our patio which should be allowed there. And when we did have stuff on our patio, it was hidden out of view so nobody could see it unless they wanted to.

Now we are in the same complex, but renting in a different unit from a different landlord. Havent gotten a letter yet.....Want to guess why? Our landlord is the president of the HOA

Sounds like someone's trying to drive out competition.

We don't have an HOA but there is a small fee for landscaping. The only minor problem we've ever had in the neighborhood was when a neighbor parked their very old mini van across the street for a couple of months without moving it. We didn't really care all that much but there was a place they could park it really close by that was not in front of anyone's house. We finally asked nicely if they could move their car and they did. Even if they didn't move it, I'd rather have that car across the street than an anal HOA.

All this FUD about rusty cars on blocks in the grass really is absurd. Maybe an HOA is useful in an area where the home values are well below the national average, but we're in SoCal where people don't use their lawn as a parking lot because the house is worth too much.

Would you have a problem with a next door neighbor who paint their house purple or have a '77 Trans Am on cinderblocks in the driveway? Granted, these are extreme examples, but it shows that a good HOA does serve a purpose.

i grew up next to a purple house, there was a puke green one down the street and many cars on cinderblocks, i really had no issue with it

I'm with Anubis.

I was bummed when my neighbor painted his purple house a boring tan last year. The purple house was cool. It's just that sort of thing that makes me want to avoid a HOA. Someone with power forcing their values upon the whole neighborhood. Throttles the life out of things.

I never knew people objected to cars parked on the street before reading this thread either. I've never lived in a place without cars on the street. You people get annoyed too easily.

Holy crap. To be honest, I don't think I ever heard of HOA until a month or so ago in that thread about home prices in downtown LA.

I am not in the position to buy a house right now and by the time I am, I will be quite a bit older I'd imagine. So my attitude on things affected by a HOA might very well change by then, but damn if I would ever want to live with one now. Some of the more hands-off ones described here might be acceptable to me, but it might be tough to know how it really is and how it could become. And regardless, it is the principle of it that I don't agree with.

I don't think we have that crap where I live. Houses that got downright awful and were a health hazard got the city in there. And in my opinion, that's only when someone should be able to tell you what to do with your own property.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go shut my blinds so I don't get a warning. Well actually I need to go get some new set, one of them is broke. And these damn neighbors, everytime I walk outside, I have to see their snow shovels by their doors, I gotta get on the phone to let someone know about that. 😉

This country is based on Freedom and no stupid HOA is going to tell me what I can and can't do on my own private property.

Enjoy your neighborhood where people park on their lawn, run noisy equipment in their backyard, and create piles of trash.

You're right. My neighborhood has no HOA and there are cars parked on everyone's lawns, they get up at 5am and turn on their lawnmowers and snowblowers and let them idle all day until they run out of gas, everyone's house is some shade of hot pink, no one mows their lawn, they run daycares out of their homes, one neighbor even had the gall to put up a basketball hoop, and to top it all off they all used large numbers on their mailboxes!!!

SAVAGES!!!! ONLY A HOA CAN RESTORE HONOR AND DIGNITY TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD SINC ONLY I AND I ALONE AM FIT TO DETERMINE WHAT IS DECENT AND APPEALING!

I'm not saying every house needs to be under an HOA and that every house will turn to shit without one. All I'm saying is that without proper city controls, those things can and do happen quite often, and I have seen it first hand. Regardless of what you think, there does need to be a minimum level of sanitation for public safety. Do you want your kids playing in the rusted remains of cars in the neighbors lawn? I didn't think so.

You are allowed children! Horror!

My HOA has been reasonable and the fees are only $120/yr. They Mostly handle lawn care and maintain the entrance to our neighborhood.

Some other tidbits from earlier posts. Our HOA enforces its regulations with liens on the properties that don't pay dues.

Also, instead of passing legal fees back to each member, our covenants have legal fees transferred to the offending party. So if you don't pay your dues you pay your dues + lawyer/collection fees to collect your dues or place a lien.

The most restrictive rule we have is that storage sheds must not exceed a certain size, must be made out of wood, and must have siding and or exterior finish and shingles that match the house. Other than that just common sense stuff like mow your lawn, no exterior signs of a home based business, no pet breeding businesses, no boats or campers parked in the neighborhood for more than 48 hours, and some generic language about unfinished construction projects.

There was a rule about fences but it was so ambiguous that it was determined to be unenforceable.

I've lived under two HOAs and under one historical society. I've never had a problem, though I have been hassled about a few silly issues on occasion.

It's a double-edged sword, just like it is to be in a "free" neighborhood and face the potential of having the house of blight right next to you. A lot of people probably wouldn't care, but some do.

dude old cars are sweet to play in, we used to play with old ones in the woods when i was a kid, as well as old and busted houses/cabins
fun times

No bad experiences here.

But I don't need one, the idea of paying 100k+ (not including interest) for a piece of property then having to pay monthly fees on top of that to a group who will then tell me what I can and can't do with said property is horrific to me.

I would just rather not bother with them.

For me it's the theory that is so god awful. Just because there are good implementations of it doesn't make the general idea any less reprehensible.

Add to that the absolute horror stories out there, and you've got a generally negative interpretation.

You're allowed storage sheds!!!???

You don't have a home owners association then. If I so much as have a puddle of water more than 4" deep in a drainage area then it's called a pool and NO POOLS ALLOWED!!!! NO FENCES ALLOWED!!! NO STORAGE SHEDS!!! NO PETS VISABLE!!! MAILBOX MUST BE THIS EXACT MODEL WITH THIS EXACT FONT AND SIZE FOR NUMBER!!! MUST BE THIS SPECIFIC COLOR OF BLACK!!!

That's my HOA, and that is why I do my best to piss them off to preserve my freedom. Yeah, I'm that guy - the one that purposefully pisses the HOA off because I can.

wow that sounds like a nightmare. Im looking to buy a townhouse. I have to check out the HOA rules before I buy. question is how exactly to get a hold of the HOA rules? I doubt the seller would have that handy

I took it as sarcasm that an would HOA allow children.

there was one HOA here that really screwed up.

a farmer sold his property to a devoloper (all but the land he had his house, and small barn on). all the houses were built and its a hoa.

Well the community was built around the farmers land. The hoa decided they didnt like the barn and started sending him letters to get it pulled down since they are nto allowed. When he told them to fvck off they threatened to sue him and take the property.

he again told them to fuck off. They actually filed a lawsuit. wich was thrown out pretty fast once the farmer showed that he was not part of the HOA and never would be.

BUT even that did not stop them. they continued to harrase the guy.

it was a big mess.

my dad lived in a HOA and they didnt do crap. but he paid $50 a year so no big deal heh

Yeah... HOA's suck. The one at my Condo enforces exactly what color of beige you need to paint your garage door trim, and fines you $25 a week of you don't fill out their annual information form on time. They don't care if your form got lost in the mail or if you happened to be on vacation at the time... it's an additional $25 a week until you return the form and pay up your back dues. They also have some other fun rules like requiring you to clean your chimney once a year, whether or not you actually use your fireplace. You're also only allowed one pet that weighs under 15 pounds (I guess that I better keep my cat on a diet!), although the folks on the condo board are somehow allowed to have three dogs that could eat my poor cat for lunch. Hmm.

Yep... condo Nazis suck.

If it's like my condo board, they'll wait until you have a signed contract and deposit before they'll let you BUY a welcome package with a copy of the condo rules for about $100. You could still back out at that point, but risk losing your deposit.

Of course, they could get away with that crap when the market was hot and reasonably priced condos sold out within a week at or above the asking price. You could probably negotiate a far more generous contract nowadays that lets you review the rules in advance.
