Probably four, but I'm not an htpc expert. wait for a second opinion, see what they say.

You should go for at least 4GB of RAM considering that it is not that expensive anymore. 2GB is a little bit on the safe side as Windows 7 64 bit can consume nearly 1GB of your RAM at idle depending on how many background programs are running.

I have two gigs of RAM in my HTPC, running Win7 64-bit. I like to listen to an online streaming radio station, and about every week or so, the page turns into an icon with an exclaimation mark, the flash plugin ate all the free memory up or something. Then I have to restart flash. So if you leave any programs running, like streaming media, and use Flash, then I would put in 4GB to be safe.

2gigs would be fine but the price of memory right now dictates 4gigs...if you are buying now that is.

I've got 3 htpc's in the house. 2 Atom boxes with 2gigs and an Athlon II x2 with 4gigs. All play whatever video content just fine.

I had 2 gigs in mine using the onboard AMD 4200 video. I now have 4gig. While using it as a computer it seems to help a bit in some areas but for movies and watching TV no real differance.

So I say 2gig in dual channel mode is plenty. Should be even better if using a dedictaed video card like a 5450 or better.

But agree that 4gig is cheap enough. I also got a cheap GT240 wity DDR5 to help my system out even more.
