Certainly the army must only have one, one star general. I mean who needs more than one division of troops? Hell just put a colonel in charge of a division if you need a second one.

There are several departments within each branch. It would be like saying only one manager for all of the small departments Microsoft any other massive company.

There can be more than one 5 star general. And there can be more than one 4 star general. And there are quite a lot of 1, 2, and 3 star generals.

Yeah, there are tons of 1-3 star generals. Each extra star is a rank, just like 2nd lieutenant -> 1st lieutenant and captain -> major.

Tradition has only a single 5 start and only in terms of special circumstances.

I wouldn't go with "tons" Maybe 1 per 15,000 soldiers or so. If that.
Oh, and 1st lieutenant is higher ranking then 2nd lieutenant.

There were a couple 5 star generals during WWII

George C. Marshall, promoted 'General of the Army' December 1944.
Douglas MacArthur, promoted 'General of the Army' December 1944.
Dwight D. Eisenhower, promoted 'General of the Army' December 1944.

Henry H. (Hap) Arnold had the unique distinction of being a five-star
general twice; in 1944 as 'General of the Army' and in June 1949
as 'General of the Air Force'. He is the only Air Force general to have
held the five-star rank.

Omar N. Bradley, promoted 'General of the Army' in September 1950.

quite and dirty army table or organization:

4 men = 1 team - commanded by a CPL
3 teams = 1 squad - commanded by a SGT.
3 squads = 1 platoon - commanded by a LT
3 platoons = 1 company - commaneded by a Captain
3 companies = 1 battalion - commanded by a major
etc etc etc

So a Major oversees 3 captains, 9 LTs, 27 SGTs and so on down the line. It works the same with generals, they're all just one rank higher than the lower star. A 3 star (LT) general oversees a collection of 2 stars (major generals) who oversee a collection of 1 star (brigadier generals) who oversee a collection of Colonels who oversee LT Colonels who oversee majors and so on.
