Hi everyone,

I don't want to start a who makes the best video card debate, but will give my opinion.

The real question here: In Q3A, how many fps do you want (what will you sacrafice to get them)?

I prefer at least 70fps in a demo, like Quaver.

MORE--

How do you turn v-sync off ay the console.

And, is there a way to have at automatically turn off when Q3A starts.

Note, "sync every frame" is not v-sync.

Further, does anyone enable "sync every frame" whatever it is???

Jeremy

To get my 70 fps, I have a GTS and still use 16 bit color, and turn OFF marks on walls.

So, who would rather have 70 and 16 bit, and would rather have 32 bit and less.

Just wondering.

I also prefer the stability of w2k over the simplicity of 9x.

Bring on the comments,

Jeremy

Some good answers so far, as for 1600x1200x... I meant fps rates that are actually obtainable.

More on the trade offs that we all make, I'll turn down anything that I have to stay at 1024x768 (although I still suck with the railgun).

Keep it coming,

I've been playing counterstrike at 1-20 fps, I consider 15fps as the absolute minimum for playing competantly.

Competitive players will not accept anything below 100fps.
They use r_picmip command to achieve it.
Try r_picmip 3 and you'll see how Fatal1ty(as well as most top players) plays.
Looks really ugly, but its all about winning .

V3 @ 180 MHz gives me 66 fps at 800x600 everything at max in demo001.

It's fine for me, but if I were a serious player I'd probably find it a bit irritating. With the most complicated and crowded maps, it can still drop below 30 every once in a while. My guess is 80+ is probably OK.

Windows 98 seems perfectly stable for me though, and I enjoy the extra few fps.

1024x768 32bit UHQ ~55-60FPS for single player

640x480 32bit Normal~90FPS multiplayer

Can't stand dithering rocket trails, I need 32bit:)

anything over 60 here, but I can't wait for the next-gen cards! I hope they rock.

Like many people I am hanging on to my TNT2!

Ideally, your fps is equal or greater than your refresh rate. For example, if your refresh rate is 75hz, then you want at least 75fps. After all, if you have more fps than your refresh rate, then you will never see them enyway, since the monitor can only draw 75 images per second (assuming a 75hz refresh rate).

Thus, if you can get 120fps at 1600x1200, your monitor probably cannot draw 120 frames at 1600x1200, and so the monitors refresh rate has become the bottle neck. If your fps are greater than your refresh rate, then it's time to turn down the resolution and achieve a higher refresh rate.

Its not that simple in real life.
Having 100fps in timedemo doesnt mean you have steady 100fps when playing actual game.
For Q3A actual fps will fluctuate from 75 to 140 if you have 100 in timedemo.
For smoothness you dont want fps to fall below monitor refresh rate.

Since i purchased my GeForce 2 GTS, i hit a certain standard in Quake III Arena that i don't want to drop below. It's about 100fps, because anything less, and it may seem weird, but i can tell, and it irritates me. In demo001 @ 800x600 @ 32bit color HQ++, i'll get around 137fps (I tweaked the hell out of my config).

I am telling you, sync every fram is not vsync...

I will find something that supports this (or I will feel really stupid later...)

Thanks for the comments,
