How many discs were the original releases on?
 
Alice was on 1 CD, but IIRC it came with another bonus disc. (corrected, Alice is 2 disks)
Phantasmagoria was 7.

The entries in the MobyGames database typically have scans of the discs, so you could check that way.
 
I have the original 11th hour disks at home, and I seem to remember it having 4. I'll check when I get home if I remember. I know that Under a Killing Moon had 4 CDs when it was released, which was a heck of a lot at the time.

It's still not small. Of course, we must remember when CD-ROMs first came around, many manufacturers were using audio tracks on the CD for music/sound. Also many computers couldn't run the kind of video decompression in real-time that even a cell-phone can today. So video wasn't compressed nearly as well.
 
Have "Alice" right here. Got it back when it was released. Seems to have two cds.
I really must get round to actually installing it and playing it sometime.
