When I was a lad I had a 1966 Chevy Impala with a 283 cubic inch engine. In the mid 1980's all the cars were saying their engine displacements in liters. I came up with a way to convert cubic inches into cubic liters and I thought I was SO SMART!

2.54 * 2.54 * 2.54 / 1000 * Cubic Inches = Cubic Liters

The little known uses of the way we measure stuff in America:

First, if memory serves, the SI measure for pressure is kilopascals. We use atmospheres. An atmosphere is (again, if memory serves; I haven't looked at this stuff in five years) the pressure of the atmosphere at standard temp + pressure. There are 101.325 kilopascals in an atmosphere.

Furthermore--I learned this one in a class on relativity--light travels about a foot in a nanosecond. This gives equations a big fat 1 for a constant, which simplifies stuff immensely.
