When i'm at school, I close all of the IM windows that i have running and swich to word or some other program like that [when the director of the television program walks in the lab]; Generally the computers that i use are for television students only....*giggles* and I'm not in the television program at my school... :p

Good ole ATOT! :D I love when funny, relevant posts like this come up. I minimize a few dozen times a day. I am in an office by myself and facing the wall near the door. But, I have conveniently placed a file cabinet between the desk and the door forcing nosy people to walk a few extra steps before they can see what's on my screen.
I always keep a few computer sites like Newegg or other business related sites up and then the non business ones like ATOT. When I hear footsteps I hurriedly switch to Newegg, or Monitorsdirect, etc. Since I am near our kitchen area 90% of the time the person passing by is going in there and not bothering me but I can never know that until they pass by.
My job can be feast or famine and although I realize some people think I surf the 'net all day anyway, when it's slow I don't want them seeing what I am posting on ATOT or wherever because it's none of their business plus I have to keep up appearances. ;)
I have one ass who has an office next to mine and she makes a point to see what I have on my screen. That drives me nuts. I call her Cindy Brady because she is so damn nosy. I've made comments on how she goes out of her way to see what I am looking at but she thinks it's funny. The worst are the people who startle me by coming in unexpectedly then I have to subtly try to switch the screen...:D

i have an idea....we can combine my senior design project with infrared sensors with a serial cable and quickly alt tabs to a word document or anything you work on.

The problem is, sometimes its too late to alt-tab. Someone is already next to you. Then you start sweating and thinking, is it too late to alt-tab now? Am I being more suspicious by changing windows than just leaving the web-page up. Or you do alt-tab and wonder if it was too late, did the person just see you switch and know you are covering up your browsing.

Then the worst is what someone else mentioned, you alt-tab to a window that doesn't fully cover the IE window, but leaves a flashing ad banner visible. So you see out of the corner of your eye this blatantly obvious banner flashing wildly while a co-worker is talking to you. You know its completely obvious and drawing their attention to it, but there is absolutely nothing you can do about it at that point. Then the dreaded moment comes and you see their eyes look at your screen to see what that annoying flashing is. Dang ad banners.

PS. I had to alt-tab once while typing this message. :)

Do I detect a tad bit of stress?:D

Heh, at a previous IT job there was this one dude who kept downloading porn movies all day at work. I didn't really care about the porn aspect of it (although I'm sure HR did), but hogging all the bandwidth is NOT cool with IT. So I went to ask him to stop, and when I walked into his cube he had a 1/4 size porn windows open. Nothing bad, looked like a popup or something. When he heard me he alt-tabbed quickly...to a full screen, hardcore image of, ahem, "naughty activities". I think that was about the hardest I have ever laughed in my entire life.

Small brower windows.....the key to stealth browsing. Keep that database open in the background and ATOT actually looks like a work window I'm diligently working on, when in fact I'm giving advice to someone that spilled Jello on their hamster and they're trying to clean it.

Be warned that if your PC is bogged down there is some lag involved. Don't want your haxor trick to fail you :)

I do the same. Delete cookies and clear history before lunch and before I leave for the day.

lol, it doesn't matter. everything you do is logged by your company's server and your boss could check without your knowledge at any time

Heh, that's what the TELL you at any rate. If you work for a smaller company, chances are it is NOT logged and even if it is, no one ever checks. If you work for some big, Nazi company they probably have automatic triggers that flag your activities and the like, so I would watch out...or get to know the IT guys :p

Of course if you have boardband, set up SSH and a proxy server on your home machine. Run an SSH tunnel to your home machine and point your browser to the proxy server you have running at home. Presto...they can log my activity until they are blue in the face and they won't be able to tell what I'm doing. Not that I'm doing anything bad...I just don't like my activities being monitored as a matter of course.

Although I should point out that at certain companies, the above activity is against the rules as well...which begs the question of how they can tell. Checking outbound traffic for SSH would work...but only if NO SSH traffic is allowed...and even then, there are ways around it ;) Not that I would recommend any of them, once you are breaking policy you can get fired if they catch you.

i don't care...shit, sometimes people walk up to me when i'm posting here and i'll finish typing and hit the submit button before acknowledging them.

the people above me never come see me...instead they call me and tell me to come see them...

a couple of tricks: first, like others have said, make your windows smaller. Second, make sure your taskbar is set to autohide. That way people can't see how many IE windows you have open, as well as apps/progs. Third, always keep your email open and place hand on mouse and have pointer over the email prog. Be ready to click on email at the first sign of danger. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, if you have your back facing the entrance to your cube/or office, hang up a CD Rom and keep your eye on it if you hear footstep and see movement in the reflection of the CD ;)

Back around '97 the call center I worked for obviously had no means of blocking or keeping tabs on anyone who was looking at porn. This guy a few cubes down was a porn downloading fool. All day long in between calls all this guy would do is go to dirty sites and look at pictures of "nekkid" women. It was incredible that nobody ever said anything nor did he get caught.

Neat trick. How do you set up SSH (and what does that stand for)? Sorry, it wasn't on the A+ test (lol).

SSH is Secure SHell, it's like telnet except encrypted and authenticated (either password or much stronger public key). You need a server of some kind of your box at home, I use OpenSSH in Cygwin. The defaults for OpenSSH work fine for most things (including tunneling). A SSH client like PuTTy is where you set up the tunnel, specifying a local port to listen on, and the remote port to forward to (through the SSH connection of course). Just point your browser to the local port side of the tunnel, and you're good to go.

Googling for "SSH tunnel" reveals a lot of good info.
