How many case fans can be powered by 350 W PS??

Hello,

I'm having stability problems with my athlon 1800+ XP. Windows XP boots up fine, and the system is stable under normal use - until a 3D game is run (serious sam 2nd demo). It will run for a few minutes, then I start seeing glitches and flickers on my CRT and finally the system freezes. The bios hardware monitor reads 38 C case, and 54 C CPU. Currently I have two 92mm fans, one blowing in from the side, and one out of the top. I have a PCI slot fan (cyclone) blowing out.

I'm thinking of adding another case fan to improve cooling so I need to know if there is a limit to the number of case fans/devices that can be powered by a 350 W PS.

Also, does anyone think that this may be something non-heat related? The memory is tested and OK.

currently my step up:

350 W PS
AMD 1800+ XP w/ retail HSF
GA-7VXRP mainboard
256 MB Kingmax DDR333
Radeon 8500
western digital 7200rpm 40GB
2 x IDE CD-ROM devices
SB Live value
Windows XP Home edition.

on order is a SK6 thermalright HS w/ delta 7200 fan

Don't be surprised if your problems go away once you get the new HSF. While I'm not sure whether or not your problems are heat-related, you definitely could add more fans while keeping your current power supply.

A good fast case fan like the YS Tech of Thermaltake takes about 200 miliamps (0.2A), even a screamy Delta only about half an amp - the single HDD and two CDROMs won`t take a lot from the 12V rail so the answer is LOTS. the spec of the 12V rail should be on the side of the PSU , an average 230W one has a 9 to 10A 12V rail,. that`s up to FIFTY case fans minus the drives and yours is 350W ;-)

i have a ermax 350. and its powerin my XP 1700+ @ 1570 alont with 2 HDs burner , DVD and 5 case fans. 3 120 mm 2x sunon and 1 Y.S tech and a 92 mm papst and a 80mm papst. all the fans are wired into the PSU. and i have a Delta scremer on my SK-6 runnin off the mobo. not havin any problims here. you should be fine.

Would suggest a better Heat sink and fan
these are the best
SK- 6
AX -7
ALPHA PAL8045U
SwiftTech MCX462

350w is a lot of power actually...it will power a lot of fans, dont be scared to hook in a few 🙂 but now, processors are running cooler so you really shouldnt be needing a TON, but still a few 🙂 you should be fine no matter what you throw at it (within reason)
