But that's me. For you it sounds like having a functional keyboard built in is a feature you want so you should certainly look for that.

It would be great for email too. You can't even dictate a reply with any email app on the Watch currently.

I don't think there is a smartwatch that is iOS compatible with a keyboard. So basically I have to decide if I can live with it or not.

Being able to voice dictate text replies is helpful but it would be better if a) I could do the same with Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp b) it probably won't work in noisy environments c) as I said before in most cases when I'm in public I don't want to reply out-loud to a text (unless I'm alone).

A functional keyboard would alleviate these issues.

I got a solution to your problem: simply eliminate the smart watch and use phone to text.

Why buy/use something that causes more problems?

It wouldn't 'cause more problems'. It's pretty obvious why being able to obtain notifications on your wrist and reply to them without having to use fish out your phone would be hugely beneficial.

huh? you are presenting "issues" related to keyboard, but suddenly it's not a problem? The exact word you used is "issues".

Dude honestly I had you on more ignore list and I'm going to put you back on it after we end this back and forth.

I have no idea what your point is. All I'm saying is a virtual keyboard would be hugely beneficial when using the Watch. That's all I'm saying. You are talking about how I should just use my phone to text. I've already made it clear that I would like an Apple Watch for notifications alone, and that in part is also to reply to them and not just read them.

The point is I would love to use my Watch to text and use other messaging apps. But with respect to texting it's limited. And for now it's not even an option with WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

I guess I just don't understand the smart watch mentality. You are welcome to put me on ignore list, no need to threaten. Did you think I care? I might hurt my feeling tonight, but I will get over it tomorrow morning :)

So you want smart watch to provide notification, that's cool. However, you can't reply without looking like Dick Tracy in the middle of a wedding which is an "issue" according to you. You want a physically impossible to use keyboard on your watch which makes that smart watch crippled. Everyone here is thinking about possible solutions, but only one is presented: Don't use a smart watch. Problem solved!

Not using a smartwatch isn't a solution. I don't understand how you can even say it is.

Clearly I'm stating that I feel a smartwatch would be useful. And I feel it's inevitable that I will purchase one at some point. So saying 'hey, just don't get one' makes no sense. That is not a solution.

Also you are being a jackass, which is probably why I put you on my ignore list a long time ago. This issue is not looking like Dick Tracy at a wedding. It's the fact that voice dictation is not possible in some situations. It literally does not work in most noisy environments. That's the problem. A keyboard would answer that problem. And it's inevitable that a keyboard is coming to the AW. Maybe it will be a third party. Maybe it won't work so well. But somehow it's going to be offered by someone. Canned responses and voice dictation is not the answer here. It's only a partial solution.

Why so sensitive?

Using a smart watch is a compromise, similar to most tech, except smart watch requires a lot more compromising as it was not designed as a "pager" nor "tablet". "Not using a smart watch" is the best solution to solve all your keyboard issue. You are not missing any notification without a smart watch, nor receiving them any slower.

Unless, your ultimate goal is to simply wear a smart watch, then yes I agree with you, you have to suffer the issues of compromising.

It's 'smartwatch'. One word.

The compromises with a smartwatch are temporary. Much like the first-gen iPhone, future generations of the AW and all smartwatches will offer more functionality and features and require less compromises.

Not using a smartwatch is not a 'best solution'. I honestly can't believe you are going on with this line. The truth is I do miss notifications. Sometimes it's because I'm in a noisy environment, or I simply don't hear my phone ping as I walk. I'm confident the haptic feedback will eliminate this issue entirely.

How is a keyboard on a watch not useful?

Because its soo small! I had a keyboard in my Android Wear watch for a while but I needed a stylus to use it! A big enough watch screen to touch type would look ridiculous.

Maybe with the Apple watch someone could use that button to give you a picker keyboard (like the kind someone uses to search Netflix with a tv remote). That might be usable. Or what I would prefer is something where you write the letters on the screen (like the Apple watch lets you doodle) and it turns those into typed letters like my early 00's PocketPC could do.

I realize the limitations. (Size of the screen.) But it's still a problem that needs a solution at some point IMO.

I know the Gear S has a larger screen than the AW, but this doesn't look all that ridiculous to me.

I think the "official" answer will be Google Now on Tap- aka Google Now reads the texts and the canned responses are the logical options for that situation. We are kinda far from that though.

Look how big that thumb is compared to any of the letter buttons! I am telling you, it is a nightmare. Unless you use a stylus, or you have a cocaine pinky nail that approximates one, it takes so long to type the right thing that you wish you pulled out your phone.

What I have done is told my friends/family:

"If you get a one or two word response from me that doesn't mean I am mad, it means I responded on my watch." I think it is less awkward to just blast one word or two in the watches direction.

I was at a i3/i8 event at Crevier BMW couple weeks ago and I saw 3 within a radius of 20 ft. You must be hanging with the wrong crowd ;)

well, if
1. you must know all notifications immediately without delay.
2. You can't make your phone, tablet, smart tv, iDrive, MS Sync, laptop, LED notification light, super long/strong vibrate, active display...etc work well enough to provide a decent notification experience.

then you should get a smart watch. However, can you guarantee you won't miss any more notification simply because another computer is strapped to your wrist?

It is very hard to ignore your wrist vibrating.
Why don't we wear a penis notification ring instead? How about something for the ladies, an orgasm from a text.

okay okay, just kidding, couldn't resist. Please don't put me on ignore list. :ninja:

I haven't seen any either, aside from one friend who is an uber Apple fan and more importantly, an iOS developer.

I live in Toronto.

I just tried on an AW for the first time. My gf needed to go to the mall and I waited for her in the Apple Store. I was eyeing the watches and then I walked over to where they have speakers and the like. 3rd party stuff. Store wasn't too crowded. Young sales rep comes up to me and says 'hey, saw you eyeing the Watches, wanna try one on?' Sure I said. So I tried on both sport models. First off, the black model is the only one where the bezel isn't light grey, and I definitely like that one the best aesthetically. Second, I think I could pull off the 38 mm model. I also think the steel of the 'Apple Watch' is fugly.

Before trying it on I did a demo with the voice dictation. The store wasn't crowded but loud enough I felt. VD was pretty damn good. Not perfect, but very impressive. Only issue I find is that if there is a mistake, you can't touch the screen and fix it. You have to start from anew. That issue aside, VD was so good I kinda want one now. But to really sell me on this I want to see a Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp Watch app too. And in a perfect world a PocketCasts Watch app that allows me to access my collection.

But I walked away very impressed.

Also I just found out CloudMagic has a Watch app that does voice dictation. That would be killer if it works well.
