How many amps does a car cigarette port output?

I am going to be buying a DC adapter for an OQO that I have. I believe the AC adapter has died so I want to know if a AC to DC convter will work. Rather than having to buy another AC adapter for $100! The ac adapter outputs 5VDC 5A should I assume that the DC adapter requires the same? Will an AC to DC adapter that outputs 12V 500mA work? or will I need something bigger?

I'm totally confused about your question. What's an OQO? If it's an UMPC, then I suggest buying the replacement AC adapter so you won't ruin your $1600 OQO. You must match the output voltage, amperage, and polarity of the original AC adapter. Typical cigarette ports are 15 amps at 12V.

On my cars they've always been on an 8 amp fuse.

Your manual should tell you. Our Expedition has 5, 5 amp ports and 1 20 amp port in the cargo area.
