I've posted this story before. Friends of friends.

Couple has computer problems and calls a local guy to come fix computer. Computer guy says HD is messed up, installs new hard drive. Computer guy then sells old HD on ebay. Ebay buyer runs data recovery software on drive, finds nudie pics of wife and name address phone #. Ebay buyer sells HD back to original couple, couple sues computer guy.

LOL

If I was selling a HDD, I'd probably just format it and FDisk it. Wouldn't worry about the rest but I don't have anything on there anyone would want.

Shake the drive really hard before you send it out. That way it scrambles up all the bits.

Is it really that easy to recover data from a drive after formatting?

I personally don't do anything more than format the few times I've sold a drive. I've also bought drives, and could give two shits what whoever owned it previously had on there. I have no idea what would compel a person to spend time and effort recoving data from a used drive. Maybe it makes them feel like l33t hax0rs? Whatever flaots their boat, I guess. I myself think it's kind of lame, though.

I do a 25 pass random bit erase 99 times for the drives that keep my "special brand" of entertainment :D

Are you sure it wasn't the guy who was advertising pre-loaded hard drives?

Its pretty easy to get stuff off of a drive that is formatted, even a couple of times. Most likely you will be safe but why risk it.

Was it mine? If so, you owe me $30.

I ALWAYS clean my sh!t out. If I'm lazy, I'll just write 0s. But by then who would really go look through my stuff? Traditional programs won't even be able to pick up any data that you wrote 0s all over. By then you would need magnetic sensors tearing apart the hard drive to read the individual platters manually.... Otherwise its DBAN all the way...

How much for one? PM me :)
