Hey guys! I am getting a ATI Radeon X1900XT and I was wondering something. Everyone says it is loud. What can you compare the sound do? What does it sound like? Does it sound like a constant person beating on the drums? what? haha thanks!

If someone would just record some sound clips of a 1900 and some card for comparison, like a 7800GTX, then we could all judge for ourselves. I've been waiting for someone to do this... it would really be more useful than the decibel measurements they do in reviews.

well, if you RePlay the Clip's volume at minimum level it will be really quiet. ;)

:D

i think Ronin said he might compare them for us . . . he says he has access to a sound room and db meters.

i'm a bit surprised no HW site did this [as they compared the Ultra DustBuster, a few years back . . . i guess it isn't that loud]. :p

My bet is it depends on what your used to ... if you have an OEM system with low rpm fans it'll seem pretty loud, but if you have lots of fans in your rig it shouldn't be too bad. I'd like to hear somone do the comparision too though.

Ronin I think you said on another thread that you have access to an anechoic chamber, and we know you have the video cards, would you take some sound clips for us?

Sound is subjective. Some people say its loud and most say it isnt. I havent heard of many complaints that the 1900XT/X is actually loud so I'm guessing the ones that say it is are rather on the fussy side.

How does it compare to the sound made by a 92mm Panaflo H1BX? That is easily the loudest thing in my case right now, but it doesn't bother me too much.

heh.. i agree with skott..

we all know that person.. who always makes comments...

"this chair isnt very comfortable.."

"this office is small... "

"that truck is too high off the ground..."

"this traffic light takes forever..."

"this music makes no sense..."

"i need oxygen..."

i dont mean to go off on a rant here but i find it hilarious to what end people go to get that perfect pc... silent.. fast... pretty...

whatever happened to the days of the dull beige box... the dull beige keyboard.. come on live it up a little.. water cooling.. u got to be shitting me.. just to piss u off id poke holes in the cables.. then let u turn that puppy on..

water cooling.... only overexcited enthusiats could come up with a way to build a cooling system that costs enough to cancel any savings of overclocking a system.. i know there are cheap kits.. i know u could build one urself.... i dunno.. i just think its funny stuff to read people get geeked out..

grain of salt..

My X1800XT (same fan) was not loud at all. During bootup, for a few seconds it was VERY loud, as they all are. Then once it posts, it quieted back down. In a case with good air flow, the card doesnt get loud at all. I did do some tests with it, and ati tool. Mine never went above 37% fan usage, even during load. 37% is pretty darn quiet. Manually raising it up to around 60%, was pretty loud, but it never went that high by itself. My GTX's in SLI were louder than the XT was, but not by that much.

In short, in a good air flow case, not very loud. In a case where the fan has to spin up high to be cool, I imagine it would get pretty loud. Or in the summer time if your room gets hotter.

As others have stated, if you have adequate airflow in your case than your card won't ramp up that much during heavy gaming. I left my stock cooler on for about a week and it was only loud (db seemed to be lower than a 92mm Tornado but a little more high-pitched) during start-up. Overall, I'd say it was in the same ballpark as a Tornado when running at 100%.
