How Loud is the Pioneer 16X DVD-Rom?

How loud is it? Should i get it? I need a drive fast enough for my plextor 12x10x32x to copy at a speed of 12x...

How bout some help?

I built a system with one, and it's loud. It's not a "steady loud", either; sometimes it gets really loud, and other times it's just moderatly loud. Damn is it fast though. I'm used to extremely loud cooling solutions, such as the GW Delta Black Label 60mm fan on my T-Bird, CardCooler XT's, Sunon high output fans, and a very loud (and fast) ASUSTeK 50X 10k RPM CD-ROM. Unless you plan on installing software from it, I'd recommend buying a lower speed DVD-ROM drive - watching DVDs is much more pleasant without the varying speeds of a DVD spinning up and down every once and a while.

I agree, I have a Pioneer 16X DVD in my home PC and it can get somewhat lound on an off
when it really spins up. Though again, the performance is quite good.

Try looking into the Toshiba 12X DVD. I've heard that it's still quite speedy, but much quieter than the Pioneer.

(Toshiba has a new 16X DVD too, but I haven't heard anything about that one.)

I have the 12X IDE Plextor CD-RW too, but I'm not sure if the Pioneer is fast enough to keep up to write on-the-fly, I've never actually tried.

It's pretty loud, just get the 12X. They are Both 40X CD Read speed, so they are basically the same thing.

I didn't find it very loud. I just built a comp with one in it, and, coincidentally the same burner. Good match if I say so myself.

oreoafk- If your worried about how loud it is just get the 12x. The 12x only reflects how fast it reads a DVD not regular CD's. Like NoreCNN said the 12x and 16x both read CD's at 40x so it will be fast enough to record to your Plextor.

Just get a Kenwood TrueX 72X, that will be fast enough....heh it may be a little noisy

If we use a PC DVD player to watch movie (because there are almost NO games out there needs the DVD capability), does the speed matter? I mean, is a 16x going to make a difference from a 8x when watching a movie?

I'm asking this because when a good amout of DVD-needed games come out, wouldn't the price drop? So for now, while DVD gaming or storage wise, do we need a 16x to watch a movie?

I have the 105-S and find it very loud. It is pretty distracting when I am trying to watch DVD movies or listen to Audio CDs. I found a German utility called CD-Bremse that allows you to turn down the speed of the drive to make it quieter. I was also wondering what I should set the speed at to maximize DVD performance while minimizing noise.

I have the 104S, and it is only loud for Data CDs, otherwise, Audio CDs and DVDs are OK, you can bearly hear it over the noise.

If you goto Storagereview.com they have a review for this product. The one particular thing I like about this drive is that it reads CDR's really fast. The 50X CDRom I had in my older computer wouldn't allow me to burn a CDR I copied to another CDR on the fly... but this DVD drive will allow me to. But, I'm having a problem that I still haven't been able to solve. Whenever I watch DVD's, it'll crash my system... It's completely random though. Once, I was able to watch a complete movie without it crashing. Anyone know how to fix it? I use PowerDVD and WinDVD... they both do the same thing... PowerDVD seems to be more stable.. but it still crashes at least once during a movie.

I have the 10x DVD rom and it can be fairly loud when reading data CDs
It's not at all loud when watching movies with it, I can't even hear it.

You need 1X to watch movies. I don't know if the DVD Rom will read at 16x for a burst. Then stop for a while, then read at 16x for a burst, then stop for a while, etc etc, or if it slows to and reads constantly at 1X, but to watch a movie you need 1X only. (I think it slows to 1X and reads constantly becuase it's very quiet when watching movies).

You haven't actually heard one of these drives have you? The Kenwood 72x is quieter by FAR than any 50x drive on the market, hell it's even quieter than the 32x I had. The drive spins at less than half the speed of standard 50x drives, more than likely equivalent to the noise level of a 24x read cd-rom which is very quiet. I love my Kenwood 72x.

I suggest getting an older DVD 8x or so that has a CD speed of 32x or maybe even 24x, because its the rotation speed thats making all the noise. Personnally I have a 8x8x32 and I end up using that for all my CD needs because its really quiet.

Mine gives a rather annoying &quot;buzz&quot; while its spinned up, which I solve by placing a piece of paper in front of the opening. Anyone else notice that this thing only remains spinned up when your using it. Two seconds later, it spins down.

I'd say it's 'farily loud', especially when you put a disc in, although it quietens after about 10 seconds. I watch DVD's on my PC, and I don't find it too loud that it irritates my viewing of the film.

I believe it uses multiple lasers... but it rotates at a slower speed... I could be wrong though.. I think i read it somewhere.
