How loud is the GTX 780 TI running full speed?

Hi, I currently have a ATI R9 290X. It is too loud for me when it's running at full speed. I'm thinking about changing it with a GTX 780 TI. Is the GTX 780 TI any quieter then the 290X? Thank you.

Yes, it's much quieter. I'm assuming you have the reference design cooler on the 290x? You can always find a 290x with an third party cooler. They're much, much quieter than a reference 290x. PowerColor PCS+, SAPPHIRE TRI-X OC, ASUS R9290X-DC2OC-4GD5. etc.

Thanks for the reply. I have a Gigabyte WindForce version. I set the fan speed at 45% but it'll still run at full speed if it gets too hot.

The Sapphire Vapor-X 290X is insanely quiet and cool. Otherwise, on the 780 Ti side, I you could look at the EVGA ACX cooler/

From my experience with 290x 45% fan speed is too low with non reference cooling. What RPMs are you running when at 45%? I've typically seen 50-55% at default fan curve iirc.

In MSI AB you can set custom fan profile. I'd shoot to keep temps sub 80c and don't let RPMs get past 2000rpms unless temp exceeds 80c.

I'd use custom fan profile first before swapping cards.

There probably aren't any 780 Ti models that will be any quieter than a Gigabyte 290X non-reference. I'd work with what you have, using tips above.

DO NOT get the EVGA ACX edition 780 ti. I had a classified 780ti with the ACX cooler and it was damn loud when gaming. The quietest card I ever owned was an Asus 280x DC card, but that GPU doesn't require that much cooling.

It's a shame that Galaxy doesn't sell cards here anymore. Their HOF edition cards were the best.

that was one bad-ass looking card!

The EVGA's aren't really known for their quietness...
the Asus DCU II or the MSI twin frozr are going to be the quietest 780 ti's...

Under tested load, the Asus and MSI were @ 39dba.
Likewise under load, the Windforce was 43dba on uber fan profile and 39dba on quiet.

You are not going to gain much.

In that case, the Vapor-X 290X should be seriously looked at.

780 Ti GHz here and I'd say its a muted roar. Then again I have a HAF XM with 5 fans+ (I forget the exact amount). Temps can hit 70 celsius.

The early Gigabyte & Asus custom R290/X are hit or miss, due to them re-using a poorly designed heatsink that was meant for the larger GK110 GPU, it does not make full contact with the heatpipes when used on R290/X.

To the OP. I think version 1.0 of the Windforce models had issues with heatpipes not coming in direct contact with the GPU die, causing higher temperatures and the fan curve to be much more aggressive. You may want to contact Gigabyte to see if they can replace your heatsink or give you a newer replacement with the newer revision. They advertise it as being cooler and quieter and if it is not then you may have a case for RMA.

I have an EVGA 780 with the ACX.
It was loud out of the box but once the fan profile was set up it's not too bad.

Really going to depend on your temps/voltage/overclock. If your case is well ventilated it will help. If you keep the temps low the fan wont need to spin up so high. My classified are specd at 36 dba under load. The 290 is 50 dba on uber or 40 on quite mode. Mine are pretty highly overclocked and my case has lots of fans (and noise). Have my fan profile to hit 100% at 75c and I can hear it when it spins up. Before that point I cant really make out a difference between the case fans running at 100% and the GPU's.

Going to be difficult to find anything quieter than your current GPU.

From HC:

If you run it with the side panel off does it still run the fans at 100%?

If you think the Windforce is too loud you need to sound dampen the place in which you keep your case, because the Windforce is not loud at all. You're going to get hardly any improvement in noise by changing cards. Much more effective to stick it in a ventilated cabinet with eggfoam crate than to switch components at this low of a level of noise
