How long...

I'm curious to know what the average life span of hardware is...

I'm talking about motherboards, video cards, cpu, hard disks, and the like.

Oh, and what brand name is it too.

A) this belongs in a hardware forum

B) every piece of hardware is different. I've had motherboards die in a month and others that never died.

I don't think that I've ever had hardware die, save a few WD drives. They lasted three months or so under serious use. Under very light use, ie storage with no executables, even they last three or four years.

I use most of my hardware until there is no more use for it. I've had 2 MSI boards die on me after about 9 months of use. I've never had my ASUS or Epox boards die on me.

ive had a few things die, really its all subjective. i feel that hds have a shorter life span. but thats just me. i usually dont wait for things to die before replacing them.

When you have the side of your case off and your window open in a heavy downpour in Indiana (sideways rain)... the lifespan is shortened dramatically

Hard drives are more prone to failure because of their mechanical parts. I had both of mine die on me within a week of each other.

I've had my current setup(besides a HD upgrade and video card upgrade) since the athlon xp unveiled. The old hd and vc were fine I just needed more space and better video.

Until I can't see any reason to keep it around any longer because it's too antiquated. Parts pass down from my main machine to the kids and other boxes I may have laying around. If I can't use it as a spare any longer it goes in the trash.

I usually upgrade before they've had a chance to die off.

but I deal with dead parts on servers on a daily basis... for a server that's on 24x7 with decent cooling, motherboards usually last 3-4 years, and ram 1-2 years. hard drives are difficult to estimate because it depends on usage and cooling.
