How long would it take to rip a DVD on my P3 system?

Takes my computer about 6 hours or so. It's a P3 733. Needless to say, I've only done it once. It's really not worth it if it renders your computer useless for most of the day.

What do you mean by rip?
If you mean to pull the files from the DVD, It all depends on the speed of the DVD drive.
If you mean compress, we have to know which program and to what format and size you are using.
My 2700xp does it in about real time. Using Flask to Divx @ 384x288

Depends on the quality you want, at close to dvd resolutions (usually 640 by anything from 300-500, depending if it's full or widescreen), it migh take a day or two on a p3 using divx. At those reso's, doing 2pass rips (higher quality than 1pass), it takes my 2.6b p4 about 4 hours per hour of video, or about 6-8 hours for the average 1.5-2 hour movie - this is scrunching them down to ~700mb, and they generally look fantastic, have to get within a few feet of my monitor to tell it's not a dvd, unless you're going over 2 hours, in which case the quality suffers a little if you want it all on one cd. You could look into xvid, which is supposedly a good deal faster than divx without sacrificing quality. If you have a dvd burner, you can avoid all that.

A P3 rig, o Jesus Christ!!!

You better get the calendar out to see how long it will take....

A P3 rig is still a great PC for nearly anything but multimedia apps & games.

(Don't ya just love it when repliers add absolutely nothing useful to your thread :disgust: )

Win98/Me are capable of being the OS for DVD burning.... DVDShrink is your friend

I just wanted to use read the data into a DVD ISO to backup my movies so when I get a DVD burner, I can burn the ISO's

So I guess it would make sense to say I have a 10x Pioneer DVD Drive (104s)

My P3 1.1GHz with 512 mb of PC100 can rip with dvd-decrypter and I can dvd-shrink it in about an hour and a half. Much shorter time frame if just ripping.
