But what's the use of making money if you're not going to spend it?

The ability to retire at a reasonable age.

To save an additional $5K would probably take me 2 or 3 months if trying. Under normal circumstances, more like 6-9 months.

Depends. At the rate I'm saving now probably 8-9 month. But if it was a life or death situation and I was to cut most of my spendings probably 2-3 month. Of course I if it was life or death I'd probably just get it from my savings acount.

actually i've been saving $500/pay period starting in december, so i'm pretty close to it right now. plus i put some of my tax return into it.

at my rate anyhow, without really struggling or anything and continuing my saving, it would take about 5 months.
