How long would a thunderbird last w/ a heatsink but w/o a fan?

I am thinkin hypothetically if someone accidentally turned off my baybus to my CPU fan, how long could it last before it would fry? It has a Globalwin WBK32. I know that the chip would basically die in 8seconds w/o a HSF. Anyone know if it could survive w/o a fan but only a HS when the computer is idle? I ordered a baybus but I'm afraid someone will play w/ the switches and turn off the fan :/

I dunno about your answer there but why dont you just not hook up the cpu fan to the bayus?

I am..thats where the problem lies. I'm afraid someone might come into my room, and be entranced by the lights and play w/ the switches. If they happen to turn off to switch for the delta cpu fan (other case fans dont matter *too* much), i am afraid I'll have a kentucky friend thunderBIRD

i would guess until the particular heatsink overloads, nad for your heatsink, you probably have at least 8seconds, if not more like 30seconds to a minute... not something to try, though...

interesting...last year i vaguely recall ... vpham stating his taisol hsf was pretty good cuz the fan was not hooked up .. by accident ... and i think it was quite a long time (relative to 8 secs) before he noticed this...i don't remember if it was a tbird...

umm...with the ? ... why not just leave the delta alone?

Forgetting to plug my Delta fan back in when changing jumpers, I got almost all the way into Windows before I got a BSOD. That process took at least 30 seconds.

Still works though, and the FOP38 heatsink was quite warm to the touch.

BTW, anyone know what the third wire is for on the Panaflo L1A's? Is that an RPM monitor?

I can't remember where, but there's a few websites that heatsink reviews that include a test that shows the length of time it takes for your computer to lock up after turning off the HS fan. They do it to show the quality of the HS without the fan. If I come across where they are, I'll post them.

Some results go from, I think, 30seconds to a few minutes.

So, I guess the cpu wouldn't die, just shutdown.........not sure though.

Oh, yeah, I forgot to say... I built a computer for a family in my town, (Duron 800@ defaults with a OEM heatsink). I delivered it, set it up, and showed it off to them for an hour or so. When I got home, I went to sleep, and woke up at like 3:00am and thought.."Oh @*$#, I forgot to plug in the CPU fan!!! So, the next day, I went over there and plugged the fan back in. They said that it only crashed one time, and that was after it went into low power standby. So, the answer to your question could be up to 24 hours.....or who knows how long
