I think oyu'll be fine for a while. I'd say go for it, unless you want to wait for Opteron/ClawHammer and DDRII and GeForce5...but that could take a while, like Summer 2003 to maybe 2004...

Always wait! Heck, next month or six months down the road they will rfelease the XXXX chip which will make all other chips obsolete.

goto repeat

end

In other words there is always something bigger and better over the horizon. Set your price and configuration goal and buy when it is in line. Gaming wise everything except the monitor will last you a few years(19" or 21" would be better).

I'd get one of the new Radeon 9700's if your going to spend that much, should be out any day now.

if you keep buying the "latest and greatest" games, I'd say the frustration factor won't kick in for about 2 years, but it kinda depends. I haven't seen any really awesome games (as far as re- playability) released for a while, so 4 to 5 may be reachable. (how about puting HALO out for the PC, darn it...)

It obviously depends on what you like to play, and how much "bandwagon jumping" you do...

(I gotta have Game "X", because it was just released yesterday and the box is pretty...)

Edit: This applys to whatever/ whenever you buy- time is from the first retail availability of the product, assuming you purchase using the "one step down from top- o -the- line" method

The 17' monitor will last just fine. Its not like its going to die or anything. Sure, something bigger would be better. That doesn't mean its necessary.
