How long will Napster last?

Eh?

Will they start charging money to use Napster, will Napster shut down completely, or will it remain as it is? what are your thoughts on the subject?

Personally I don't really care all that much, but it'd be nice to keep it the way it is.

They will shut down and go away. You'll just have to steal your music somewhere else.

Oooh, that one hurt, Russ. :D

Nah, I don't steal music. When I like a group and want to have their album, I buy their CD, not download every song I can find. I don't have massive archives of music like some people do (for one thing, it takes up a lot of room), but it is a nice convenient program to have around if you want to sample music. That's just what it should be used for...

And another thing I may note, is that serious musicians will not care how you obtain their music, as what they care about is people hearing the music. Downloading MP3s from Napster hardly hinders anything at all.. But you can think whatever you want (like "napster is evil").

Anyone else have some input? :)

Edit: I also want to add that I am a prisoner of Dialup, so I'm not a very effective mp3 stealing monster :)

No, serious musicians want money. Only poor musicians who are just starting out want to be heard by everyone so that their customer base grows and they can start charging.

Aren't they appealing again though? Chances are they'll win, or at least delay the inevitable some more. I use other services to get my music more often than Napster now...so I'm not really concerned. Don't forget OpenNap. people can still run their own Napster servers and the Napster client will continue to work...

Your stealing the music from lawyers and accounts who take 90% of the musicians money. I would be willing to send the musician a donation if I like there music so long as only the musician keeps the money.

Napster or something like Napster will one day replace the big record companies. The musicians will sell there music directly to fans for a much lower price.

Most musicians only get a buck or two per album sold so if albums were say $3 the musician would get a rich faster.

congress is going to hold some more hearings on this napster thing, and
they have been more sympathetic with napster than the record industry,
especially senator orrin hatch.

napster will live on in many forms. it will be an empty victory for the
riaa.

I'd love to pay $1 a song. I'd much rather get just the songs I like anyway. I wouldn't have a problem with that at all.

I just got finished cataloging my CD collection and converting the vast majority of them to MP3s. My computer is now a jukebox, can't beat it while coding.

I won't pay a monthly fee, but I'd pay per song--anywhere from 50 cents and $1. Give it to the musicians--let them fire their record companies.

Music to mine ears!

Anyway, to answer the question I know not how long napster will last as I don't know much about it. But it is pretty obvious it's anti-capitalist so I hope it believes in reincarnation.

I download a couple mp3s from a band off of napster, then buy the cd if I like em. That's not stealing. I also use Napigator so I don't care at all if Napster gets shut down.
