If i were to build a 3400 AMD64 computer with a 6800GT...possibly using the stepup to the ultra from evga....would it last long.

I am not talking about top of the notch..but how long do you think i would be able to play the newest and best games?

YMMV of course, but with respect to gaming at pretty close to the "highest" visual/sound settings I'd say 1.5-2.0 years (FC/Doom3/HL2 engine based games)...."medium settings" 2.0 to 3.0 years (next generation graphics engines come out) ..."low settings" 3.0 to 4 years ("photo real" quality visuals are all around us...or so they've been "predicting" we every generation of new GPU/VPUs HAHAHAH!).

I think a comp that can handle the d3/hl2 engines will have plenty of life. I think we finally saw the last major quake3 engine game when CoD came out and it's still very popular 5 years after the release of quake3. When quake3 came out, no video card could run that at high res/high settings either, with d3, the 6800 series is already able to run everything near maximum. A 3400+ and Ultra, with some overclocking later on, should allow you to play games at higher settings for the next 2 - 3 years at least.

The only game you might have trouble with is Unreal3 when it's done. I saw the shaky-cam video of that running on a 6800 ultra back in april and it was just barely better then a slideshow. I've liked the unreal engines but they never seem to run as well as id stuff.
